Cheese from Velika planina is a must try

Slovenia is full of great food, where are also some mountain areas with their own specialties. One of these special places is also Velika Planina with its own amazing cheese from Velika Planina. Not only that, a must-try mountain specialty in this area is sour milk with buckwheat mush. That’s not just a delicious old-school dish but a healthy one as well. We tried this sour milk with buckwheat mush, sprinkled with pork rinds, and I’m telling you, this is real comfort food which gives you energy. Mush is warm, and the texture is compact, while sour milk is cold and refreshing on those hot days. After that, we had a pleasure to taste various types of cheese; they were completely different from the ones you can buy at the deli store. Some of them were young, others matured.

The hands-on treatment from start to finish, the raw ingredients, and, of course, the cheesemaker himself guides those cheese from Velika Planina to its remarkable flavor. It was hard to pick just one, but we did it and bought it, so we could enjoy it later in our cabin. Just before we moved back to our cabin, the nice shepherd made us some herbal tea and because hot tea takes longer to cool in the summertime we made a toast with domestic moonshine. What a joy it was to slow down!
