This time we will wander in Cambodian Siem Reap street. Pub street here is surely a place you will visit and we recommend you don’t miss the Miss Wong Cocktail Siem Reap Bar. You’ll get the exact location at the bottom of the bar review so relax now let us tell you more about this stunning spot.

If you are looking for a neat place to have a cocktail here in Siem Reap, Miss Wong might be your answer.

About Miss Wong

Miss Wong is the name of a portrait, painted by a self-taught artist Vladimir Tretchikoff. The famous portrait of successful Russian artist Tretchikoff happened only by coincidence. Somewhere in the early 1950s, Miss Wong bumped into Tretchikoff in Cape Town, where he immediately decided he wanted to paint her. His realistic style is very inspiring and truly shines in this portrait, which has been reproduced many times. There are many items where we can find Miss Wong and this diversity can be a parallel with the artist’s life. In his 92 years, he lived on three continents with countless twists and turns.

This is Miss Wong.

Miss Wong Siem Reap Bar Ambience

Strong Chinese influence is obvious from far with iconic lanterns and red walls. Contrasting wooden furniture divides attention with dark furnishing that compliments live plants really well. Of course, you’ll find the iconic Miss Wong in the most obvious places, but you’ll see many different art pieces on the walls. Most of all we admired vintage pieces for their emblematic charm and authentic Shanghai touch. However, the contrasting blend of old & new, local & distant was equally impressive. Miss Wong Cocktail Bar in Siem Reap truly is a unique place where you’ll relax under the iconic dimmed lights in the speakeasy way.

A lot of red and golden details is a theme here.

Miss Wong Siem Reap Bar Menu

Our focus at the Miss Wong Bar Siem Reap Bar were drinks. And we assure you their menu pleases many different tastes. A large portion of the Miss Wong Drink Menu belongs to different extraordinary spirits, beers, and various wine options. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a bite. For sure you can, and the food menu is in sync with charming surroundings. We are talking about home-style Chinese cooking. You’ll have a portion of moreish taro chips even if your goal is just to have a taste of some infused gin and tonic.

Vivi drinking
I love cocktails and I can’t do anything about it. Except drink them 🙂 However, I can nag about plastic straws…

Miss Wong Punch

We had a cocktail or two and here is a must one, Miss Wong Punch! Knock-out house special is based on Gold rum, St. James Amber, and Triple sec. Each spirit comes with different qualities. Gold rum comes with deep, wooden notes intensified with some smokiness and sweetness. Saint James Amber rum is matured in oak casks and comes with spices and dried fruit notes. Both are great combined with orange-infused spirit, Triple sec. To that base, barmen added cranberry, pineapple, mango, and lime juice.

Cold drink and taro snack is a way to go in Siem Reap.

Final Thought

Miss Wong Siem Reap Cocktail Bar is quite the opposite of loud Pub Street behind the corner. Therefore, it is a perfect place to retreat when you want to refresh and enjoy a bite with friends. Why do we think Miss Wong is one of a must-visit here in Siem Reap? Because of its tranquility, cool ambiance, and drinks, of course. Cocktails are solid and in Cambodian heat, they will go down like Prince’s Andrew titles. However, the biggest downvote is plastic straws and there could be some better presentation of the drinks alone.

I hope you liked our Miss Wong Siem reap review and you will pay them a visit.

Hello friends and good cocktail seekers. It’s been a while since our last speakeasy bar, but hey better late, than never. Nightlife in Siem Reap can be a fun adventure with memorable drinks. We certainly got inspired by the Menaka Speakeasy cocktails in many ways. So much so that we want to share our Menaka Lounge Speakeasy experience in the lines below. So, let’s see what you can expect from the speakeasy bar in Siem Reap which name means celestial damsel and heavenly beauty?

Menaka Speakeasy Siem Reap
Menaka Speakeasy Siem Reap has backdoors when at the front doors you might find a café.

Menaka Atmosphere

First thing first, the painting on the entry doors is amazing. It isn’t just a pretty sight, but it also could be a hint of creativity. Once inside, you’ll be greeted by the kind staff, flooded bar, and dimmed lights. In fact, the lighting brings additional privacy to a somewhat small space. Low light is also perfect for the interior in tones of the dark flame. When looking on the walls, we noticed carved stones, paintings of Khmer music stars, books… Wherever we looked it was obvious that this speakeasy bar in Siem Reap is run with respect to Cambodian history. Despite that, there is a noticeable parallel with the American Prohibition Era.

Menaka Siem Reap
Menaka Lounge Speakeasy ambiance is pleasant.

Menaka Menu

Could it be that papyrus scroll or old royal writs inspired Menaka menu? Either way, it feels special to read about craft cocktails from the cloth roll. Some of the best artisanal drinks in Siem Reap are inspired by the Angkor, Sangkum, and the Great Era. The Angkor era celebrates the wisdom and flavors of the ancient Khmer Empire with classic Cambodian ingredients. Cocktails in the Sangkum era are named by the songs, which capture the era of joy and love. The Great Era celebrates the quick growth and globalization that modernized Cambodia.

Siem Reap Cocktail
Hot weather and cocktails are a match made in heaven.

Besides the mixed drinks you can have a serving of Japanese or Scottish whiskeys. In case you want a bite or two you can also order some food from Menaka Café.

Our Cocktials

Love Like Honey

The praise of sweet honey is clearly understood through the seductive sweetness. We could clearly taste the honey backed up with mango nectar refreshed with lime. Taste profile made a complete circle with Vermont bringing the toasted wood and grain notes to the close. Since this is no joke drink but a vodka-based cocktail, we can say it is surely one that will make your evening a pure joy.

Monsoon Perfume

A flavorful rollercoaster keeps the mind occupied even after a sip is long gone. Once a refreshing mixture of lime, mint, tonic, and gin comes to a close Kampot pepper takes over. Our tastebuds found it addictive! It is incredible how smoothly the tranquilizing greeting ended with a pleasing tingle. Although we advise caution when drinking because Ian got a splinter of mature lemongrass in his drink. No bottoms up, but mindful sipping is the way to enjoy this delectable mixed drink.

Menaka Cocktail
A flavorful rollercoaster with a picante finish.

Peerless Shape

Ahead of tasting the Peerless Shape, we were expecting the sweet tutti-fruity bubble gum notes we discovered in jackfruit a while ago. Instead, we were amazed by the savory flavor profile that jackfruit is also famous for. In this case, it didn’t taste like pork, but more like raw bread dough, cheese, and fresh walnuts. Yes, interesting but not something we would want to hold on to. Still, we were blown away with the possibilities entrusted upon creative mixologists and couldn’t resist but compare it to the Out of Nowhere cocktail.

Dragon Fruit Cocktail
Raw bread dough, cheese, and fresh walnuts… Interesting cocktail for sure.

Final Thought

Menaka Lounge speakeasy is a nice surprise here in Siem Reap. Warm ambiance, nice service and interesting cocktails are a winning combination for every bar seeker. Well at least a cultured one, for the animalistic party you will need to take a few hundred meters further. But hey, we all have our needs and preferences. This speakeasy is great to chill zone after your temple run. We recommend you pay them a visit and enjoy Siem Reap in full capacity. Any downside? Sadly yes, plastic straws! They should check their competition Sokkhak River Lounge, and see how they tackle this

Some of you must be wondering what is going on with the best travel blog in this world, full of wisdom and helpful reviews. Where are new posts? What are these wackos doing? I will tell you what. We have a lot going on lately, and I think we aren’t the only ones. The world is changing in front of our eyes, and we would like to finish some matters from the past. Tourism is taken for granted, and “everything we touch is turning into poop” lately. If you don’t believe me, I will try to explain you through this article. Welcome to my experience at Bokor National Park Cambodia.

Bokor National Park Cambodia
Bokor National Park Cambodia my friends. Well, at least what’s left.

Are you asking yourself if it is worth visiting Bokor National Park Cambodia? Yes, it is, and you should buckle up. Sadly, Bokor National Park is dying. Greedy people are deforesting it faster than Red Khmers violated human rights in the past. If you expect greenery all the way your eyes go, you are 25 years late. It rips my heart when I see stupid projects like “grand hotel” in the middle of the national park. Usually, hotels like this are rubbish, and there is not even a slight chance of deserving our review.

bokor national park cambodia
People are shit in the foundations – Bokor “National Park”, Cambodia
Bad review of Bokor National Park
Totally normal view for a national park, right?

As an example, there is Thansur Sokha Hotel, designed straight out of communist architecture biro. It looks deserted, and there is no sign of guests. Just a glimpse around the building will give you a feeling of military structures more than tourist accommodation. On top of that, the facade is in green color. How convenient, right? Nevertheless, that is not the only hideous building in Bokor National Park. Corruption is in full swing, and abandoned building sites will get new competition. “Luxury apartments” in the middle of the national park. I can’t imagine what kind of an egoistic shit form of life will live there.

Thansur Sokha Hotel
Thansur Sokha Hotel or should I say Secret army base?
Thansur Sokha Hotel
I am crazy? Then you explain these facilities…

But hey, there must be something nice in Bokor National Park. Yes, it is. It is a rocky desert and dick-shaped plants all over the place. Much more beautiful than stupid “projects”. Clouds will make some cinematic scenery straight away, and your motorbike ride can be fantastic. However, for the sake of health, make sure you will wear enough warm clothes there. Bokor National Park is above 1000 meters, and the temperatures can decline drastically.

Rocks pile
If only human’s minds would be balanced like rocks here.
Nepenthes pitcher plant
Phallus-like flowers aka Nepenthes pitcher plant

Ironic thing is, there are main gates before you arrive at the national park. It looks like they charged the fee back in time, but now it is abandoned. Probably because of refunds. “I am sorry, I paid to see a national park, not military structures and deforestation sights” Take Europarc statement: “Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of ‘wild nature’ for posterity and as a symbol of national pride“, and reevaluate your idea. Bokor Hill is a more appropriate word for this disappointment on top of the hill.

Untalented musicians to take their album covers.

So, why are you recommend visiting Bokor National Park, Ian? Because it is time to face our stupidity, and if the world is going to collapse (only the manmade part, reasonably), you will be light-hearted about this. We f***** deserve it! Enjoy your travels till next time. We are coming with a review of a fail heritage hotel in the middle of pristine, or rather ex-pristine nature.

The abundant offer in Siem Reap can be overwhelming. Most tourists are focused on Angkor Wat, but that isn’t the only place worth visiting. Actually, the walk down the Siem Reap river will give you a different perspective. On its banks, there is the lovely avenue, and right there we found another treasure. In the lines below we’ll focus on the Sokkhak River Lounge that is within a walking distance from well-known Siem Reap Pub Street.

Sokkhak River Lounge
It is always a joy to see a good design in bars and restaurants.

Sokkhak River Lounge Atmosphere

For those of you, who love greenery you’ll love the Sokkhak River Lounge. There you’ll find a connection with nature almost without effort. Tall windows at the ground keep the view unobstructed and the café well chilled. We particularly loved the terrace, especially in the evening. Although, even more special is the sunset view at their Rooftop Bar. Up there, guests can enjoy the canopy of Siem Reap in changing colors.

Sokkhak River Lounge ambiance
There is a good connection between nature and the interior and that is the right way!
Vishnu God Statue
God’s statues as decoration? This is the Hindu god, Vishnu.
Sokkhak River Lounge
At Sokkhak River Lounge, you can enjoy nice artworks as well.

Menu

On the ground floor, you’ll find an assemblage of invigorating drinks. Whether you crave a cup of coffee or tea, don’t miss their drinks made of fresh fruit. Then again you’ll find a selection of mineral water and a handful of alcoholic beverages. In addition to gin, wine, and beer we must mention cocktails. Although, don’t expect artisanal masterpieces but fresh fruit does taste delicious. We were particularly pleased with the mocktails we had.

Sokkhak River Lounge
Seat inside or outside? That is now a question.

Our Cocktails

White Dragon

Who wouldn’t love the mocktail made with fresh fruit? Pina Colada lovers know exactly what we mean by that. Besides this famous tropical drink, we have the NOBU Soju Dragon cocktail in mind. That unforgettable creation we had next to our NOBU afternoon tea was also made with dragonfruit. At the Sokkhak River Lounge, they sweetened the dragonfruit with pineapple and balanced it with lime juice. What we loved most were the changing flavors. At first, we could taste pineapple, but the aftertaste was focused on dragonfruit.

Dragon fruit cocktail
White Dragon is a perfect example of a tropical cocktail

Sokkhak Punch

Punch lovers pay attention, for a gingery fire that will clear your throat before you finish it. On the first note, you’ll taste fresh orange juice combined with bubbly Sprite. As it fits for a punch there is alcoholic addition in a form of Jameson whiskey. At first, it is fruity but after a sip or two, you’ll begin to pick the healing side of ginger. Here we must confess our disappointment over unbalanced flavors that left us irritated. Luckily, our mocktail kept the fire under control.

Tropical cocktails
Sokkhak Punch and Sokkhak’s Cooler.

Sokkhak’s Cooler Mocktail

A cooling mint is a queen, yet it is greatly matched with the refreshing lime juice. Lychee, the middleman, doesn’t stay out of the picture for too long neither. In fact, it is well present in aromatic sweetness that kept us glued to the glass. We absolutely loved this easy-to-make drink that fed us a little as well. Its thick consistency came out of blended fresh mint and lychee.

cambodia cocktail
I love these straws! Suck d*** plastic!

Monkey Tail

A combination of Grenadine syrup, orange, and juice of a very ripe mango resulted in an intensely tutty-fruity manner. If they would replace the syrup with passion fruit we would love it. Although, they could ditch grenadine entirely and use the juice of green mango. As it was, we liked it even less than the punch we had before.

Monkey Tail Cocktail
Monkey Tail Cocktail – ditching of mainstream syrups would make a huge difference.

Final Thought

Sokkhak River Lounge in Siem Reap will provide an energizing experience at any time of the day. This can be because of the heavy presence of vegetation, but also the place gives off the restful character. What we loved most was the kind service and freshly juiced fruit in their drinks. Another welcoming tribute to nature was also the absence of plastic straws. Just like at the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort we got lemongrass that did the job perfectly.

Sokkhak River Lounge
Chill my friend!

Mocktails will cost you 4,5 USD and cocktails a dollar more, which is a barging. However, here is a link to the location for easier navigation.

The lounge at the Kep Sailing Club is the perfect place to spent hours while watching the descending sun. One might argue that with a million-dollar view, you don’t have to expect much of a service. On the contrary, when we were at the Kep Sailing Club Lounge Bar, we were “happy as a clam”. Surely, idyllic Cambodian’s sunsets and soothing waves played their part, but there is more. On the rest, we’ll focus on the lines below so continue reading our Kep Sailing Club Lounge review. Although, if you are interested in eating at the Kep Sailing Club Restaurant make sure to read our review.

Best beach bar in Kep
Why not wander around the Kep Sailing Club before finding the best spot?

Ambiance

First thing first, summer fun is at home at the Kep Sailing Club. Before we reached the Lounge, we noted activities of all sorts that can happen on this seaside side property. The list is long, so we will focus on the spacious Lounge itself. Most notable is the breezy feel of the open Lounge made of wood. The material is kept in dark chocolate tones that act like a hug with supporting pillows in sunset tones. Next to the bar is a meaningful art piece made of used tins that livens up the back wall. Overall, beach life for sure.

The open design of Kep Sailing Club Lounge is perfect for the beach-side property.
sculpture made of recycled materials
We love this meaningful art piece, it keeps us on track to produce as little waste as possible.

Kep Sailing Lounge Menu

A special place on the menu belongs to the Cocktails, but there are other options. Of course, there is beer, wine, and stronger spirits, but you’ll find alcohol-free options and a handful of bites as well. Our eyes were pointed on mixed drinks so expect the details on those. In general, we enjoyed the experience but we weren’t blown away by artisanal magic. Sure enough, we enjoyed the roasted peanuts seasoned with kaffir lime leaf, chili, garlic, and lemongrass.

wooden fish sculpture
The Gulf of Thailand is a marine gem, filled with life, but the health of the ecosystem is deteriorating every year.

Our Cocktails

Lychee Lime Fizz

Refreshing mint kept us cool till the end but it took over the main wheel from lychee. We missed this fragrant sweet fruit in the aroma, but we got one meaty example inside to nibble on. Indeed, it was a lovely counterbalance to the lime juice. Once the fruit went down the drain, we appreciated moderate honey touch.

Kep Sailing Club Lounge menu
Syrup on the side for those who think that the Lychee Lime Fizz or the Lounge Special cocktails aren’t sweet enough.

The Lounge Special

Sweet pressed citrus syrup with aromatic and orange bitters complimented each other wonderfully. Nevertheless, the drink wouldn’t be such a delight without the heavy influence of pineapple-infused rum. Plantation 3 Star Pineapple Rum bonded with the bitters due to its smokiness and tropical fruit extending much further than just pineapple.

Kep Sailing Club Lounge special cocktail
3 Star Pineapple Rum bonded with the sweet pressed citrus syrup and both aromatic and orange bitters wonderfully.

Pina Colada

Beach bar simply can’t exist without good ‘ol Pina Colada. This Pina Colada was the real deal from start to finish owing to fresh ingredients. Juiced pineapple and fresh coconut were the real gems. Although the 3 years aged Havana Club rum rounded up the drink with its characteristics. Think of caramelized pear and banana, but most of all we picked on the vanilla and smoked oak.

Kep Sailing Club strives to practice ecological consciousness and paper straws are living proof of that.

This mistake smashed us with for our taste too sweet introduction, leaving us searching for the fading passion fruit. We found it in the aftertaste, right where the ginger and aromatic bitters were hiding as well.

Final Thought

Although the view is outstanding, the ambiance lovely, and the summer breeze on point but there is just one detail missing – artisanal cocktails. You know, homemade liqueurs, syrups, more fresh juices and presentations, all that and more creativity as well. I know the majority is just fine with “classics” made of mainstream syrups, but hedonists like us are willing for more. And that is right! Kep Sailing Club Lounge has a lot of potentials, and who knows maybe next time we will be there they will show us all best.

Everything tastes better with salt. But wait till you add another magic ingredient. Below we will focus on his pungent friend which was even a currency, back in Roman times. Of course, we talk about pepper, or if I may be specific, one of the best peppers in the world – Kampot pepper. A touch of pepper magically transforms countless dishes and helps our bodies stay healthier. What is more, each type leaves a unique mark with its characteristics. Usually, we don’t take time to study humble spices, but when we do the rabbit hole opens up. Here is a little bit of everything we want to share with you after seeing the beautiful pepper farm in Kampot.

Kampot Pepper plantation
Cambodia doesn’t have only amazing sunset, but also delicious Kampot pepper. This photo was taken at the La Plantation .

About Pepper

Let’s start with a mind-blowing number of plants in the Piperaceae family. Can you imagine how different are all those 3,600 species? To us humans only one really matters, the Piper Nigrum, a black pepper plant. The history of pepper cultivation in southern India dates back to 2,000 BC where it was first discovered. No wonder black pepper is heavily present in Ayurvedic medicine and Indian cuisine.

Piper Nigrum plant
The same plant provides pepper harvest from February till May for over 20 years.

Today’s biggest pepper producers are Vietnam and Brazil, where plants are heavily treated with chemicals to achieve high yields and low prices. Most of us see the pepper in the store, where it is ranging by colors rather than sorts. The famous green, black, red, and white quartet comes from the same plant. They only vary by ripeness and treatment.

First thing first, pepper indeed has the desired peppery kick greeting to the tongue. However, keep in mind, the spiciness and aromatics start to fade after 3 years, or sooner when stored improperly. The taste of pepper differs from the ripeness and variety and can be used almost everywhere – salt dishes, desserts, and even cocktails.

Raffles Bloody Mary
Fresh green pepper adds unique twist to the Raffles Signature Bloody Mary. For more check our Elephant Bar Siem Reap Review.

Soil Matters

Soil affects the pepper plant the same way as it influences the wine. Still, ground controls plants in many ways. For example, the best pepper in the world is grown in mineral-rich soil where quartz crystals are present. We are talking about the Kampot pepper, where climate and location offer the perfect conditions for growth. Another thing that we must mention when talking about the soil is how well the plant can spread its roots. That gives the peppercorn plant ability to receive needed minerals and nutrients, which affect taste the most.

La Plantation Kampot
Kep and Kampot regions have the perfect quartz-rich soil and climate for the best pepper in the world.

Grow Your Black Pepper

Having a live plant in your home will provide you with oxygen, it is a joy to look at, and I didn’t even come to the taste. Light demands of a climbing Peppercorn plant are modest, it needs moderate indirect light or semi-shade. On the other hand, it is quite demanding regarding temperatures, because it demands eternal summer. Keep in mind that the peppercorn vine originates in Kerala, India. Water demands are also worth mentioning because the black pepper plant likes humid air and a drink sooner than later. Surely, the peppercorn plant will test your patience. For the fresh pepper berries, you’ll have to wait for 4 years. In the meantime, you can accept how quickly time flies and get excited about the future.

Peppercorn on a vine
Certified Kampot pepper is grown organically, plus a bite here and there makes the plant stronger.

Kampot Pepper

As mentioned, Kampot pepper enjoys a special status as “The Pepper King”, meaning the best pepper in the world. How wouldn’t it be with the ideal combination of quartz-rich soil, tropical climate aided by the ocean breeze? In addition to suitable land in Kep and Kampot, growers are focused on Kamchay and Lampong pepper varieties, which are Cambodian sweethearts at least since the 13th century.

Growing black pepper
During dry season pepper growers water each plant with about 15L of water every 3 days.

The most brutal time for both peppercorn varieties and people was during the genocidal Khmer Rouge rule. During that time this precious pepper was almost whipped out of the surface of Cambodia. The leading cause was the need for soldiers plus the international pepper trade was a reminder of French Colonial times. It took them a decade for traditional farmers to return to the crop of their ancestors in the early 2000s. Since then, the traditional growing practice without chemical fertilizers is in play for the certified Kampot pepper.

La Plantation
Store and restaurant at the La Plantation is inside this 80-year old dining hall from nearby monastery.

That and more lead to Geographical Indication protection of Kampot pepper in 2010. As with other products, constant inspections are a must in order to keep the desired outcome. As a matter of fact, one ounce of organic white Kampot pepper costs up to 100 USD in 2020 on western markets. For that price, one gets high-quality organic pepper that is hand-selected and sun-dried.

Taste of Kampot Pepper at La Plantation

If you are in Kampot, Cambodia it is a must to visit at least one pepper farm. The most known and probably the biggest one as well is “La Plantation”. When we tried the prized harvest after our plantation tour, we absolutely loved the aroma. The flavor profile of the finest pepper in the world is very rich, fruity and somehow difficult to describe. One can get a little bit of everything, depending on your imagination and time. We started with a slightly dusty nose, but that was gone after we chewed on well-ripe pepper berry at the first stop. By the time we got to the final tasting, we were certainly ready to slow down. Let’s check different Kampot peppers, shall we?

Long pepper
Long pepper has a bit more heat than traditional black peppercorns.

Red Kampot Pepper

One can say this is the best you get, ultra-premium grade pepper at the peak of maturity. Red Kampot peppercorns taste surprisingly fruity and contain the highest level of sugar. If you smell them, you can discover the aroma of dried apricots. However, freshly ground dried red berries carry a well-rounded cloud of the citrusy peel with an array of fresh berries, grounded by the eucalyptus and pine aromatics. They are the last ones to go off the cluster, often hand-picked off the stems.

fresh red pepper
Perfectly ripe pepper berries taste the sweetest.

White Kampot Pepper

White pepper at La Plantation is produced from peeled red berries, leaving the seed to shine on its own. Ripeness supplies the powerful bouquet of delicate aromas and conceals spicy taste with hints of fresh grass and citrus.

Green Kampot Pepper

Unripe pepper berries deliver more pinaceous notes with a minty and citrusy presence. This type of pepper is ready for harvest between March and May. Due to the early harvest, its spiciness is not as strong as in the well ripe or dried alternatives. Basically, green pepper is unripe and comes to the store as dried and canned. We loved it raw in Bloody Mary and stir-fried, regardless of techniques we were blown away by its floral to piney aromatics.

Pepper market
Kampot pepper was present on countless French dining tables during French colonial rule in Cambodia.

Black Kampot Pepper

When berries start turning yellow, they pick the pepper and give it a quick hot water soak. That way the berries are cleaned and skin gets black during the drying. Usage wise this is the most common pepper with a mildly sweet and most intense spicy kick with present botanicals notes.

Pepper Health Benefits

Pepper will never grow out of fashion; it is too important. This versatile spice has been around for over 4 millennials. In that time, it has found its way into Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese medical protocols.

Kep crab market
Lady is ready for a new cook-off. Most sought after are stir-fried crabs with fresh green pepper.

There are many reasons for that, including the fact that pepper is high in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. Berries of the Piper Nigrum plant are scientifically proven to fight free radicals and chronic inflammation. Piperine presence in the berries improves memory and benefits the brain in many different ways. As a matter of fact, when you add the edible black gold to your meal it increases nutrients absorption and supports digestion. Who hasn’t heard that resveratrol and curcumin don’t do you any good if they are eaten without black pepper?

Kampot pepper
A pinch of black pepper increases nutrients absorption and helps digestion among other benefits.

For those of you who don’t like the magical Piperine bite, let me share a thing or two about the pepper essential oil benefits. When mixed into the carrier oil it relieves pain in case of spasms or arthritis. Black pepper oil is no stranger to those who are after the radiant, rejuvenated, and evenly toned skin. It should be a go-to option for skin detox if you happen to have skin impurities, infections, or allergies.

fresh green pepper
One-third of world pepper comes from Vietnam, while Brasil is the second-largest producer. Both are known for the heavy use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers.

Conclusion

As you can see Kampot pepper is not only a delicacy but also a medicine. Pepper has many health benefits and it is a king among the spices. You can combine it with sweet, salt, drinks, you name it. If you are looking for one of the best peppers in the world, you need to go to Kampot, Cambodia, and try this outstanding Kampot pepper.

We can say that Kep is a favorite province in Cambodia with everyone looking for a quiet break ever since 1960. Kep is a great launchpad to island hopping, but the real gem is local seafood. Indeed, crabs in Kep are a must and plentiful dining options will make your head spin. After a few circles around Kep, we spotted Kep Sailing Club and stayed there from lunch to dinner. Keep reading this Sailing Club Restaurant Kep Review to find out more about this beach restaurant with a view that keeps on giving.

When the sun goes down you will have a unique spectacle with your dinner.

Ambiance

If we focus on a single word to describe the atmosphere of the Sailing Club Restaurant Kep we go with the breeze. That may be because of the light wind, although the south-facing location between the land and sea is quite breezy as well. Speaking about the unique features of the Sailing Club restaurant, this is a restored traditional fisherman’s cottage. Naturally, restoration expanded the outdoor area to get more angles for the unobstructed view of the horizon. The end result is a casual veranda where guests can chill in the shade.

best restaurant in Kep
What used to the old fisherman house is now the hottest restaurant in Kep.

As it happened local fishermen spotted a school of fish in the shallow water right in front of the restaurant when we were there. Talk about entertainment! Plus, we haven’t mentioned the colorful sunset, which was spectacular that day. Actually, to be more specific it was breathtaking every day and we will probably remember Kep by its sunsets forever. With the setting sun, the sitting area expands to the end of the pier where the feeling is even more special.

Kep Cambodia
Chill vibe is real at the Kep Sailing Club. Here you can release your knots!

Drinks

Mixed drinks on a beach are a must and The Sailing Club is aware of that. We were particularly happy to see an array of cocktails and mocktails in The Sailing Club menu. In addition to that, one can pair a meal with a glass of mostly French wine selection. Then there are house spirits and aperitifs, although if you desire some beer or Kampot cider you can stop by as well.

Kep Sailing Club
A well-shaded area is most welcome on a hot day and so is the ocean breeze.

Food

What we loved about The Sailing Club was the use of organic local produce. Regardless of what is on offer, the menu is inspired by the local and global taste. Needless to say, the Kep’s star, the seafood shares a considerable portion of the menu, but one can find vegetarian options as well. Finally, there are mouthwatering sweets with or without the handmade ice creams and sorbets.

Kep crab with kampot pepper
We loved the generous portions and use of different vegetables in every dish.

We also have to share with you is the fact of the generous portions for all the dishes we ordered and the real feel of solid home cooking. Aside from that, we loved the dried black Kampot pepper on tables and the strong presence of fresh green Kampot peppercorns on the menu.

Our Lunch at The Kep Sailing Club

Daily Soup

Daily soup varies on the daily basis, depending on the available ingredients. When we were there, we had a delicious chicken and mushroom soup seasoned with young lemongrass. The broth was rich despite gentle seasonings, which kept chicken in the spotlight even after we added some lime juice to it. The soup alone was wonderful, but with toothsome noodles and onion shreds, it was at its best.

Daily chicken soup was delicious and nutritious.

Crab Cakes

The chef was very mindful of seasonings and respected the gentle crab meat, albeit we could boost the flavor with lime juice and smoked jalapeno dip if desired. Indeed, crab meat is easily overpowered, but the tender inside remained at its best regardless of the additions. As intended the freshness of coleslaw made of crisp cabbage, cucumber, bell peppers, and carrots, was a perfect fit for the deep-fried crab cakes.

Stir-Fried Kep Crab

To enjoy the tender meat of locally caught crab we had to roll up our sleeves and use some power. As it happens, sucking on the shell is particularly rewarding to extract all the juices, including the ones enhanced by the peppercorn. At the Kep Sailing Club, they stir-fry the crab with fresh green Kampot peppercorns and vegetables. On the side, we got perfectly cooked rice and a lime wedge, both are lovely contributions for keeping the tummy full.

Snapper with Khmer Spiced Sauce

On top of the pan-seared snapper, we got a generous spread of coconut peppercorn sauce spiced with dried chilies. This tasty sauce was delicious also with the garlic steamed vegetables and toothsome rice. We loved the textural differences between crisp vegetables and tender fish fillet.

Khmer coconut sauce with fish and rice

Brownie with Mango

Chocolate sauce that was poured over the chocolate brownie was a great companion to the fresh mango and mango sorbet. Due to the melting sorbet, we focused on it but we couldn’t leave the compact chocolate brownie alone. Good thing we didn’t. It was excellent to catch the contrast between the refreshing sorbet and heavy chocolate. In addition to that, the perfectly ripe mango was really the icing on the cake. The only downside here was that we didn’t get Kampot pepper on top of the brownie. Apparently, they went out of it and that’s simply unforgivable. The Kampot pepper with chocolate was the main reason we ordered this dessert.

brownie with mango
Perfectly ripe mango, artisanal ice cream, and brownie were made for each other. The biggest fiasco is no Kampot pepper on the top. Apparently, they were out of stock. Outrageously

Conclusion

Sailing Club Restaurant Kep is one of the best places to have delicious food and unforgettable sunsets at the same time. Not only that, but here you will also find Kep Sailing Club Lounge Bar, just across the path and we will write about it next time. However, the food was delicious with only a few mistakes and the service was nice as well. To point out, Sailing Club Restaurant’s location is worth 10 points by itself and we warmly recommend a visit here, if you will have a chance in the future. Just make sure they aren’t out of the fresh Kampot pepper which is probably the biggest sin there.

Welcome back to all hotel review seekers and travelers. Today we will check probably the most Instagrammable hotel in Siem Reap, Cambodia. We are talking about Sarai Resort & Spa which is built by Moroccan inspiration and that’s not all. As you might know, we already posted their Seasons SPA Review, where you can see a few bits of this stunning luxury hotel. Today we are presenting you with more succulent photos and a sleek Sarai Resort & Spa Review.

Sarai Resort
Welcome to the little slice of Morocco in Siem Reap!

Ambiance

Piece of Morocco in Siem Reap features impeccable ogee curves and high ceilings that defy hot weather. Of course AC is on, but not at the inner courtyard where you can freshen up in the large hotel pool. By the looks of it, one is easily transported across the globe to Morocco. However, an open hallway on the way to the Sarai hotel room sets you right in Siem Reap and so does the food.

Sarai Resort ambiance
This Moroccan style somehow fits to this Tropic climate.
moroccan design
A pool in the heart of Sarai Resort cools the air in the courtyard.

What we loved was an abundance of natural light and charming details Morocco is famous for. Then there is the story of an act where ancient Siem Reap meets Cambodian second-largest city. So why not mix colonial French legacy with the Instagrammable hot spots?

Arches are no strangers to the Khmer architecture and neither to the Moroccan.
hallway with sun
Can we all agree the hallways here at Sarai are cinematic.? Especially when the sun goes down and the golden light comes to the scene.

Check-In

Before I got a tour around the “lobby charms”, Ian was waiting for me with the keys in his hand. What can be better than fast check-in, right? In a word, Ian described staff here at check-in as fast, nice and welcoming.

Sarai Resort lobby
This is the Lobby of Sarai Resort and Spa. I love the open space with plenty of natural light coming in.

Our Room

Most of all, we loved the reusable water bottles that staff change every day. Minimalizing single-use plastic waste is on top of our demands that luxury hotels fail to fulfill. And here we are talking about big names like Mandarin Oriental, Sofitel, Intercontinental, Four Seasons…

Our Room was 307. Lovely tags, by the way.
Glass bottle of water in hotel
Glass bottle of refilled water at hotel. This is what I am talking about! Well done Sarai Resort & SPA!

We also loved the bathroom sink at the doors, after all, washing hands should be the first thing after entering the private quarters. To point out, our room had interesting layout. It stretch over two floors, where lower space has a bedroom and bathroom, and upper floor vast terrace.

Sarai hotel room
Our hotel room was cozy even without the upper floor.
Bathroom at Sarai Resort and Spa
The layout isn’t bad, but some toilet doors would be nice. And if you ask me, the shower would be a much better option than a cramped bathtub.

We’re talking about the semi-enclosed terrace with very comfortable sitting and hanging daybed. Suddenly we were faced with the temptation of sleeping outside, but the cozy king bed downstairs, sorted this “problem”. In general, the room was clean and neat, providing everything we need. Wow, it’s rhyming. To continue… However, some maintenance show wouldn’t hurt, though.

Terrace at Sarai Resort
Our terrace could host the whole squad and the lucky one could have the swing as well.

Facilities and Amenities

If you aren’t feeling right for a Sarai Seasons SPA, you’ll enjoy a cooling inner courtyard. Especially thanks to the salt-water swimming pool. Although, we urge you to visit Seasons SPA, at least for a relaxing foot massage. If not you can pull out Ian. Cold cocktail by the pool and he is all cool.

Playing with the setting sun is the best, can you spot it?
common space at Sarai
Cozy common space is what every hotel needs!

By the way, this layout of the pool is a traditional Moroccan trick that keeps the place cooler. The pool is especially charming after dark, possibly for a post-workout cool-off. Guests can exercise their hearts out at the hotel gym if the meal at the Goat Tree Restaurant was too big.

Sadly, no high teas here at Sarai, but luckily three amazing options here near. Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra, Grand Hotel d’Angkor and Park Hyatt

Goat Tree Garden Restaurant

Sarai Resort’s buffet breakfast happens every morning from 6 am to 10 am at the Goat Tree Garden restaurant. In that time frame, guests can choose among the western breakfast classics and local must-haves. Let’s not forget the fresh fruit and salad selection, which got replenished as needed. Then there is the egg menu that soothes the hungriest souls. The breakfast selection is broad enough to keep you full till lunch.

Goat Tree Restaurant
Goat Tree Garden restaurant is a lovely place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

From noon till 2:30 pm anyone can visit the Goat Tree Restaurant for some tasty Khmer dishes. We tried some of their signatures, like Combination platter and Chef’s mix. Both plates included different local Khmer salads, with the winning chicken and green mango salad. We proclaimed it unanimously due to the wonderful alliance between fragrant herbs, crunchy vegetables, and tender chicken. Here we must admit that the rest was very tasty as well, especially the rich plum sauce that was perfect with the fried spring rolls.

Breakfast at Sarai Resort and Spa
Breakfast at Sarai Resort and Spa, Siem Reap is simple yet delicious.

Following toothsome starters, we tried creamy yellow chicken curry with sweet potatoes, carrots, and long beans. It wasn’t too spicy and tasted very nice, but we preferred the luscious coconut soup with a shrimp ball and fresh Kampot pepper. We finished our delightful meal with a scoop of coconut ice cream and passion fruit sorbet. Both were spot on and we recommend a meal at the Goat Tree Restaurant during your stay at the Sarai Resort & SPA.

Khmer tasting menu
We enjoyed authentic Khmer cuisine for lunch.

Final Thought

Indeed, we loved the most Instagrammable hotel in Siem Reap with all its charms and plant abundance at the ground level. Although it isn’t quite as luscious as the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra, it is picture-perfect. However, it has something that many hotels lack; in-room reusable glass bottles and infused water in the lobby. We get that pandemic changed the rules and single-use plastic soared, which is just heartbreaking. Hopefully, with unforeseen reset, we will change our attitude towards earth. It is now or never! Thank you for reading our Sarai Resort & Spa Review and see you next time.

Seasons SPA at the Sarai Resort Siem Reap is the place to be after the Angkor Wat tour. Despite adrenalin rush during the temple run, your feet will suffer at the end of the day. Chances are, your back will be reflecting the offbeat routine as well. Luckily for you, the Sarai Resort & SPA has a few treatments to help you through the active part of your well-earned holidays. I tried their foot massage and it was divine. So, let’s get to our Sarai Resort Seasons SPA review where we go into details.

All the walk around Siem Reap took toll. My feet were exhausted

About Seasons SPA

Seasons SPA menu is built around four basic elements; Air, Earth, Fire, and Water. These elements are a pillar of signature Seasons Rituals, where you can support elemental powers most essential to you. Each season offers another type of massage and all but Autumn includes body scrub. Most extravagant must be Romantic Ritual, due to the face and body hot stone therapy. On the other hand, you can calm your mind with tailored body and beauty treatment topped with facial care of your choice at the Seasons SPA Sarai Resort.

A simple sign will peel your eyes away from the Sarai Hotel entrance and point you towards the stepping stones. Once you get around the corner, you see the Seasons SPA entrance. Of course, the black and white Moroccan theme continues throughout the Seasons SPA. Together with some oriental touches, like an open foot massage area, is particularly relaxing. Most of all we loved the chillax vibes setting the time on serene tracks.

My Experience

I must admit, all the walk we did in Siem Reap, showed on my heavy feet. That’s the reason, I choose a one-hour foot massage from their menu. Before my massage, we checked the lovely display of natural lotions, oils, and scrubs. I loved the smell of sweet almond, which is perfect for the Moroccan-inspired surroundings, although blood orange was spot on as well. While I was sniffing away the fragrant products, we got cooling pomegranate juice to toast to the occasion.

My foot massage took off with a herbal bath and continued with a pleasant scrub. I couldn’t say no to the intoxicating frangipani exfoliation. In addition to that, the towel was pleasingly rough to get rid of the last dull bits.

Seasons SPA Siem Reap
Outdoorsy foot massage area brought us from Morocco to Thailand, but Khmer touch kept us in Siem Reap.

Finally, the eager lady rubbed my feet with trained moves up to the knee and down to the toes. What I especially loved was incorporated acupressure and of course divine smelling oils. In the end, I got a cup of hot lemongrass tea, which felt wonderful despite the hot temperatures.

Final Thought

I doubt that there is a person who doesn’t enjoy being pampered now and then. My only regret is that I didn’t have more time and try another massage. Despite my short visit, the masseuse made a fantastic impression with her receptive nature. The ambiance is nice, staff super lovely and prices affordable. Therefore, I warmly suggest giving them a visit next time when you will be in Siem Reap. I know, I will. If you are asking yourself about the hotel itself, here is our Sarai Resort & Spa Review post.

How time flies! It’s been almost two months since our last bar review, so better we come strong with this one. Today we will check Elephant Bar which is situated inside glorious Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor, Siem Reap. The Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor was Siem Reap’s first hotel, and it remains the city’s grande dame. There is no secret that hotels like this are hiding some of the most sophisticated bars. Elephant Bar Siem Reap is classic, easygoing, and prestigious at the same time. To find out about our experience, please continue with reading our review.

Raffles Siem Reap
This iconic building has been through some turbulent times in the past and of course, the present is no different.

Elephant Bar Atmosphere

Not so long ago, we wrote about Raffles Siem Reap High Tea and if you remember, we were astonished by how lovely this hotel is. However, we didn’t have the chance to stay here. Probably we can simply call this, the Raffles curse. When we were in Singapore we couldn’t stay at Raffles, due to the renovation, and now again. Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor is just to be renovated as well. Anyway, we will be back in Siem Reap, for sure!

Raffles Siem Reap
The doors of Elephant Bar Siem Reap are open from 4 pm till midnight

Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor is all about the charming colonial luxury design and lush details. The same goes for the popular Elephant Bar, which is a snug place with dark wooden furnishings and bright walls. As the name indicates, it is safe to expect some sort of Elephant in a room.

It is safe to expect at least one elephant in a room at the Elephant Bar Siem Reap.

Indeed, our eyes caught numerous small statues and giant tusk arching above the Areca Palm trees. Hopefully, the presented tusks are artificial and not real.

Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor Elephant Bar Drinks Menu

Drinks selection at the Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor Elephant Bar is broad, to put it mildly. We were drawn to the list of special and all-day cocktails, but sours & fizzes were very tempting as well. Then there is a list of wine and spirit that covers the world’s famous regions for both sections. Here we must admit that the so-called “sipping cabinet” filled with different single malts, rums, bourbons, and rye is bigger than the “grape juice cellar”.

House-made specials in carved bottles present numerous creative possibilities, but if you look carefully, there is an elephant behind them 🙂

Here one can relish some drinks and unwind.

Interesting Fact
Raffles Hotels have its own house-gin made by Sipsmith. This so-called Raffles 1915 Gin was created to celebrate a 100 years of Singapore Sling cocktail. When you are in Siem Reap, go and try this Gin if you have a chance.

Our Cocktails

Airavata

Signature Airavata cocktail is a must-have drink at the Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor. This fruity tropical drink is named after the divine five-headed elephant and therefore served in a handmade elephant mug. Flavor-wise you can expect crème de banana liqueur, lime juice, and fresh coconut juice, aided by malibu and rum.

Airavata cocktail
The only downvote to the tropical Airavata was the single-use plastic straw.

We can say that it somewhat resembled the tropical pina colada whenever we had a taste of the juicy pineapple garnish. What we didn’t like was the single-use plastic straw, hopefully, they will soon move on the sustainable path!

Of course, the drink inspired by the five-headed divine elephant comes in a lovely handmade mug.

Raffles Signature Bloody Mary

Adorable fresh Kampot pepper on top of the deep red drink looks gorgeous, but tasting them makes all the difference. It’s no secret that Kampot pepper is unique, so we grabbed a chance for tasting whenever the opportunity presented itself.

Raffles Bloody Mary
Fresh green pepper adds unique twist to the Raffles Signature Bloody Mary

A combination of Broken Shed Vodka and tomato juice spiced with Raffles Signature mix is spot on when paired with a delicate aroma of fresh green pepper. Even if you avoid the spicy garnish you’ll enjoy the Bloody Mary with its renowned savory notes.

Kampot pepper
Kampot pepper is a delicacy by itself. When you pair it with a cocktail like this you are in heaven. Great job!

Final Thought

There is no doubt, Elephant Bar Siem Reap is an exquisite bar, just like it should be. Heritage hotels are carrying a rich story and believe me most of them started in the bar. Sure, this is not a legend like Bamboo Bar but… The ambient of the Elephant bar is nice, the cocktails are on the artisanal level and the service is delightful. After all, this is all we are looking for.

Price & Location

All-day cocktails come at a price of about 9,40 USD while Raffles Fame costs about 14 USD or more.
