AFTERNOON TEA

JW Marriott Hotel Hanoi Afternoon Tea Review: Lakeside Tea at The Lounge

Hanoi is often called the city of lakes, and afternoon tea beside one sounds like a scene borrowed from a romance novel. Mễ Trì Lake, beside the National Convention Center, may not have the legends of Hoàn Kiếm or West Lake, but its broad stretch of water gives The Lounge at JW Marriott Hotel Hanoi an unusually calm outlook. We came for tea, fruit and a little quiet away from central Hanoi. What followed was a JW Marriott Hotel Hanoi afternoon tea review with lovely drinks, several memorable bites and a few details that kept the experience from feeling as polished as its setting.

The Quick Verdict

Is JW Marriott Hotel Hanoi afternoon tea worth booking?

8.5

  • Fragrant TWG Royal Darjeeling tea and excellent fresh fruit juices

  • Several Western-style savory bites suffered from dry bread and muted flavors
  • The presentation and cleanliness of our tea stand needed more attention

Best for: Travelers who value a quiet lakeside setting and an unhurried afternoon away from central Hanoi.

First Impressions of The Lounge

The scale of the hotel is immediately apparent. Its strict architectural lines and enormous public spaces create a serious, almost ceremonial mood, softened by reflective ornaments, warm brown tones and orange orchids. The Lounge is an open space built around height and light, with a soaring ceiling and a wall of windows facing the lake. From our oversized chairs, the view made the room feel even broader, while the quiet corner gave us somewhere comfortable to settle in for the afternoon.

Orange orchids brought color and softness to the otherwise formal interior.

JW Marriott Hotel Hanoi Afternoon Tea

The set served during our visit arrived on a modern square three-tier stand with fruit, savory bites and sweets. It was a more tropical and locally influenced interpretation than a traditional British afternoon tea. We appreciated the ripe fruit and the Vietnamese touches among the savories, although anyone arriving with dreams of warm scones and clotted cream would have been disappointed. There were no scones in our set.

Our afternoon tea for two combined tropical fruit, savory bites and small desserts.

We began with neatly cut fruit: guava, jackfruit, mango, dragon fruit, rambutan and passion fruit were perfectly ripe and full of flavor. The strawberry and apple were less impressive, but this colorful first tier still felt wonderfully suited to Vietnam. It was also one of the simplest parts of the set, which made its quality all the more noticeable.

Tea and Fresh Fruit Juices

Our TWG Royal Darjeeling had a sweet aroma recalling apricots, peaches and dried fruit. In the cup, its musky depth was balanced by gentle sweetness and a citrus-like lift. Being able to examine the tea samples before choosing was a thoughtful touch and made the selection feel more considered.

TWG Royal Darjeeling brought musky depth, gentle sweetness and fruity aromas to the table.
Seeing and smelling the tea leaves helped us choose our pot with more confidence.

The freshly made juices were an unexpected highlight. Pineapple with coconut and papaya with mango were served properly chilled, with the fruit doing all the work. Both tasted vivid and refreshing, and we enjoyed every sip. They also suited the tropical fruit on the stand far better than a more predictable soft drink would have done.

Pineapple with coconut and papaya with mango were two of the most refreshing parts of our afternoon tea.

Savory Bites: Local Flavors Led the Way

The crab sandwich was the strongest of the more familiar tea sandwiches. Its seasoning allowed the crab to remain the focus, while crisp cucumber added moisture and texture. Beetroot with feta on spelt bread also worked well. The avocado and shrimp sandwich was much quieter in flavor, despite its radish garnish, and dry bread did it no favors. A tomato and Brie open sandwich had the same problem and felt plain beside the more expressive local bites.

The shrimp and avocado canapé looked appealing, although its flavor was too restrained for us.

The Asian-inspired savories had much more personality. Our favorite was a juicy beef wrap, where garlicky minced beef met the sweetness and crunch of carrot. Its thicker rice paper had a pleasing bounce that distinguished it from a traditional Vietnamese roll. That roll was fresh and balanced, with cilantro providing the clearest herbal note.

Three different rolls, with the juicy beef wrap in the center becoming our clear favorite.

Seaweed-wrapped beef jerky delivered plenty of flavor but was too difficult to chew and awkward to divide between two people. The salmon canapé was more straightforward, combining a thin layer of creamy spread with seaweed caviar on grilled bread. It was generous enough to work as a complete bite, even if the “caviar” was seaweed rather than the real thing.

The Vietnamese-inspired savories had more character than the Western-style sandwiches during our visit.
The salmon canapé was finished with seaweed caviar and a light creamy spread.

Sweets: Small Desserts, Stronger Memories

The marzipan-filled macaron began to melt as soon as we bit into it. Its delicate shell and generous filling were beautifully balanced. A chocolate chip cookie followed with a satisfying crunch and no shortage of chocolate, while the vanilla tart paired fragrant shortcrust pastry with a smooth filling. The dark chocolate cube looked as though it might be dry, but the opposite was true: it was remarkably moist and one of the best sweets on the stand.

The vanilla tart impressed us far more than the soft bean cake.

Bean-based desserts have never won us over, and this version did not change that. The cube was too soft for our taste, while its sweetness and sesame seeds could not give it enough definition. We enjoyed the egg tart much more, particularly its pastry base.

Our favorite sweets were the macaron, moist chocolate cube and chocolate chip cookie.

Chocolate pralines felt like the right ending. Both melted beautifully, though their fillings were less distinct than we hoped. Dark chocolate easily overpowered the pistachio cream in one, but the two still made a pleasing whole. We would never have identified mango in the second praline without being told. It remained sweet and enjoyable, though far removed from the bright mango-filled white chocolate we had imagined.

We inspected the chocolate display before choosing the pralines that ended our tea.

Service and Presentation

The room promised a highly polished hotel experience, but the details at our table did not always support that impression. The staff seemed distant and were not especially helpful, whether because of a language barrier or simple lack of attention. Our stand also arrived looking untidy and needed a more careful check for cleanliness. Even the tea trolley showed small finishing flaws that felt conspicuous in such a grand setting. None of this ruined the afternoon, but it weakened the sense of occasion.

The modern stand suited the room, but its presentation needed more care.
The tea trolley was useful, although its finish did not match the grandeur of the lounge.

Conclusion: Is JW Marriott Hotel Hanoi Afternoon Tea Worth It?

Our afternoon tea at JW Marriott Hotel Hanoi was an experience of contrasts. The lakeside setting felt formal and impressive, yet the service and presentation were surprisingly loose. We remember the Royal Darjeeling, fresh fruit juices, tropical fruit, beef wrap and several excellent sweets with genuine pleasure. Dry bread, muted Western savories and a lack of care around the stand made the complete experience less convincing.

For a quiet afternoon beside Mễ Trì Lake, The Lounge has an atmosphere that few central Hanoi venues can reproduce. Based on our visit, however, it was not an essential afternoon tea experience. With the concept now updated, the setting remains appealing, but the current menu deserves to be judged on its own terms rather than by the set shown in our photographs.

The lakeside setting remains one of the strongest reasons to choose The Lounge for a slow afternoon.
