Panpuri Spa Penang Review: Mali Moonlight at E&O

Editor’s Note: Checked October 2026. Our photographs and score cover Panpuri. E&O’s official spa page now lists Spa L’Occitane en Provence; booking details are below.

A massage was an easy addition to our escape together at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Penang. Panpuri Spa occupied the sixth floor of the Victory Annexe, and even the walk there helped us slow down. The corridor was bright, with herringbone floors and greenery outside the windows. We had booked the Mali Moonlight Soothing Massage, a treatment that gave Ian’s tired muscles and my preference for a gentler touch quite different jobs for the therapists.

The Quick Verdict

Our verdict on Panpuri at E&O

  • Consultation and oil selection before the treatment.
  • Therapists who responded to our different pressure preferences.
  • A warming blanket that kept me comfortable.
  • An unhurried finish with mint tea in the relaxation lounge.

I liked that approach to the spa almost as much as its entrance. After a long journey that morning, the daylight and the view of the greenery were a welcome change of pace. The treatment display outside was carefully arranged, too. It made me stop for a closer look before we went in.

Panpuri Spa Penang: The Setting

The spa paired dark furniture, pastel fabric wall coverings and candlelight with a brighter treatment room in cream and brown. It was a comfortable place to spend an hour, with a shower and a generous locker for our belongings. Those practical details helped us put everything away and concentrate on the appointment.

A small jewelry box gave us somewhere to leave our valuables, and the decorative touches rewarded a closer look. The peacock feather was my favorite. I tend to notice these things; Ian tends to photograph them.

Before the Massage: Tea, Towels and Choosing an Oil

Our welcome included chamomile tea and cold towels scented with lemongrass and orange. After traveling that morning, I particularly appreciated the cool towel and its citrus scent. The staff then asked about physical concerns, areas that needed attention and what we wanted from the massage. I liked having that conversation before getting onto the table.

We could smell the massage oils and hear about the options before choosing. It gave us a more personal introduction to the treatment than simply being handed a menu. Once we had made our selections, the therapists took us to the room.

The small details caught my eye, and Ian had his camera ready.

The Mali Moonlight Soothing Massage

Mali Moonlight was presented as a combination of traditional Thai massage, aromatherapy, acupressure and Reiki-inspired techniques. Our session lasted 60 minutes. It began with light cotton robes and a foot bath with lime and makrut lime leaves, followed by a salt scrub. That small ritual gave us time to settle before the massage itself.

A salt scrub was part of the foot ritual.

While our feet were soaking, the therapists switched on a warming blanket. I get cold easily, so that was more useful to me than another decorative flourish. Once I was lying face down, a bowl of floating flowers beneath the table provided a pleasant view through the face cradle. I watched them for a while and gradually stopped paying attention to much else.

Floating flowers gave me something pleasant to look at through the face cradle.

The therapist’s touch was gentle enough for me to relax, with enough pressure to ease the stiffness I had brought along. I enjoyed the scent of the oil as part of that experience. The balance suited me: I wanted a soothing massage and came away happy with the amount of work my muscles had received.

Ian Is a Hard Rock

Ian gave his therapist a little more to do. Carrying a heavy backpack had left him with several stubborn knots, and she worked on them while checking whether the pressure hurt. I remembered him laughing at my discomfort during a Valentine’s massage and briefly considered this a small settling of accounts. He came out of this appointment much better than that comparison suggests.

The spa amenities supplied for our appointment.

What mattered was that we did not receive exactly the same massage regardless of what we needed. His therapist spent more effort on tight areas, while mine kept the pressure at a level I enjoyed. By the end of the hour, we were both more relaxed, and there was still time to sit down before leaving.

The pressure was firm enough to work on stiffness without overwhelming me.

After the Massage: The Relaxation Room

The appointment ended in a separate relaxation room with Moroccan mint tea, dried fruit and magazines. We were given time to sit quietly and return to the day at our own pace. That finish made a difference to me; I would have disliked going straight from the massage table into the next activity.

Conclusion

Panpuri suited the kind of break we wanted at E&O: time together, attentive therapists and no hurry at the end. I especially valued the consultation and warmth of the table, while Ian benefited from the extra attention to his tight muscles. The lounge gave the whole appointment a more generous rhythm than the massage duration alone suggests. I also bought some of the Panpuri products, enjoying their fragrance and the smoothness of my skin after using them. For me, the appeal was in those small, tangible comforts.

I enjoyed the products enough to take some home.
