The first impression at Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra is not the scale of the lobby or a theatrical arrival. It is the greenery. Flowers, mature trees, and carefully maintained lawns surround the low-rise buildings, while birdsong follows the paths around the lagoon. After the heat and movement of a day among the Angkor temples, that sense of calm becomes one of the resort’s greatest strengths.
The landscaping invites an unhurried walk, with bridges, paved paths, and small places to sit beside the water. Khmer art and decorative details also give the French colonial styling a local identity. The result feels composed and romantic without turning the resort into a stage set. Of all the features we remember from our stay, this garden atmosphere remains the most distinctive.
Check-in was brief and pleasantly personal. The welcome drink brought one of those small details that stays in the memory: intense lemongrass iced tea presented in a clear bottle with a fresh infusion and a lemongrass stem used in place of a plastic straw. It was simple, attractive, and entirely suited to the tropical setting.
The gardens may not appear on a conventional facilities list, but for us they were the resort’s most valuable amenity. Benches and walking paths make the grounds enjoyable in their own right, while shorter routes connect the rooms with the pool for guests who prefer efficiency to another lap of paradise.
The large free-form pool is the natural center of a slow afternoon, especially after an early start at Angkor Wat. Close by, the gym had enough equipment for a proper workout, along with water and fresh fruit during our visit. The resort also has a spa, a children’s club, and access to Phokeethra Country Club for golfers. We particularly liked the outdoor pavilion over the lagoon, which gave the public areas a sense of space that is increasingly rare in newer city hotels.
In-room amenities covered the essentials, although the beverage selection was ordinary for a hotel at this level. Complimentary Twinings tea and water in plastic bottles felt disconnected from the care shown elsewhere. Television channels were also limited, but with Angkor outside and a pool this inviting, the remote control was never the most important object in the room.
Our room was bright, comfortable, and softened by a view of the gardens. The sitting area became our favorite corner, partly because the planting and curtains provided privacy without shutting out the greenery. Colonial-inspired furniture and Khmer decorative touches connected the room with the character of the wider resort.
The bed gave us a good night’s sleep and the layout worked well. The bathroom was the weak point. Its plain, utilitarian design lacked the warmth and elegance found in the bedroom, lobby, and gardens, making it feel older than the rest of the experience. It was functional, but it was not the room detail we expected to remember from a five-star resort.
Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra offers a mix of French, international, and Khmer dining. During our stay, guests could pair French cuisine with wine or choose a local dinner accompanied by traditional Khmer dance. We also appreciated the resort’s herb garden, a small touch that suited the green character of the property.
The wine collection at Explorer’s Tales was substantial and attractively displayed. Several restaurants and bars covered everything from a poolside drink to a more formal dinner, while the lounge also served afternoon tea. The range was generous, although execution across the food offering was less consistent than the surroundings and service.

Breakfast at The Citadel covered Asian and Western favorites. A health-focused station offered freshly prepared juices, yogurt, cereal, nuts, and fruit, followed by salads, cold cuts, cheese, breads, and eggs cooked to order. Warm dishes included soups, vegetables, meat, and several sides, with a broad pastry selection for anyone beginning the day in a distinctly French mood.
Club Millésime is Sofitel’s executive-lounge concept, usually linked to eligible room categories, status benefits, or a paid upgrade. At this resort, its location made it especially memorable: a pavilion over the lagoon, surrounded by water lilies and separated from the busier public spaces. The food was acceptable rather than memorable, but cocktails and wine made the evening service enjoyable. Afternoon tea bites were also available, and breakfast in the lounge offered a calmer alternative to The Citadel. That peace, together with the pavilion setting, was the strongest reason to consider club access here.
Service was one of the clearest highlights of our Sofitel Siem Reap stay. The team combined Sofitel’s polished rituals with the natural warmth we encountered throughout Cambodia. Smiles felt genuine, greetings were graceful, and conversations never seemed forced. The resort is large, but the staff kept the experience personal, which mattered more to us than any formal display of luxury.
Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort is an excellent choice for travelers who want a peaceful luxury hotel near Angkor Wat and value gardens, a generous pool, and attentive service. Its strongest qualities are emotional as much as practical: the birdsong in the morning, the paths beside the lagoon, the warmth of the team, and the relief of returning to a green retreat after hours among the temples.
The bathroom felt dated and the food did not consistently match the standard set by the atmosphere and service. Those shortcomings keep the resort from being flawless, but they do not erase its character. If a calm base matters more to you than sharply contemporary room design, Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra remains easy to recommend. Vivi, for one, would have happily extended the stay.
