From a distance, the traditional Tudor-style building could hardly look more British, yet it somehow belongs in the Malaysian highlands. The Smokehouse opened in 1937, and the neighboring golf course strengthens the curious feeling of stepping into a small English bubble.
It is easy to understand why British expatriates once came here when homesickness took hold. The flower-filled garden and cozy rooms framed by dark wooden beams recreate an idealized corner of home, made even more persuasive by the cool highland weather.
Inside the original building, antiques extend far beyond furniture and carpets to porcelain ornaments and copper tableware. Some of that character reaches the extension where we had afternoon tea, although the metal greenhouse structure and terracotta floor felt awkward in a hotel otherwise so devoted to heritage style.
If the weather cooperates, choose one of the outdoor tables among the flowers. Rain is never a distant possibility in the Cameron Highlands, but the original living room provides a cozier refuge than the brighter extension.
Our afternoon tea set included local black tea. Other tea or coffee choices were available for a small supplement during our visit, but we stayed with the standard option because we wanted to taste something grown in the surrounding highlands.
Rather than the better-known BOH label, our pot contained Cameron Valley loose-leaf black tea. It had a pleasing mouthfeel and enough complexity to stand up to jam, cream and fruitcake without losing its character.
The rustic scone had a firm crust that crumbled gently, while the center remained pleasantly moist. Its homemade flavor was free of the powdery shortcuts that can spoil a scone. Topping it while still warm with strawberry jam and thick Devonshire cream was the strongest moment of the set.
The Smokehouse afternoon tea remains memorable for its straightforward homemade cooking and old-school charm. The classic finger sandwiches tasted fresh, with smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber among the fillings. A slice of fruitcake was equally flavorful, although so small that anyone with a determined sweet tooth may want a little more.
Because the tea set was short on sweets, we ordered an additional strawberry sundae. This proved a wise decision. Fresh strawberries, homemade strawberry syrup and vanilla ice cream formed a simple but mouthwatering combination, with the local fruit doing most of the work.
Yes, if you can sit in the garden and arrive with realistic expectations. The Tudor-style hotel, cool air and abundant flowers create an old-school English illusion that feels more convincing than we expected in Malaysia.
Indoors, the romance faded. The room felt dark and crowded with objects, and the tea presentation never matched the charm of the building. The food told a happier story: the warm scone, fresh sandwiches, fruitcake and local black tea were all enjoyable, although an additional sweet would have made the set feel more complete.
