Bar Stories Singapore Review: Bespoke Cocktails on Haji Lane

Editor’s Note: Updated October 2026. This review preserves our original visit, first published in April 2018. The practical details below were checked separately against Bar Stories’ official website.

Bar Stories Singapore is a cocktail bar on Haji Lane where the order begins with a conversation about what you like. That was what drew Ian and me there: a recommendation for a hidden bar with personalized drinks, including a tom yum-inspired cocktail one bartender was known for. We had heard about it at a poolside barbecue in Singapore, and the thought of a little spice in a glass was enough to send us looking. We ended up with two quite different cocktails, friendly service, and a room that was much simpler than the drinks.

The Quick Verdict

Finding Bar Stories on Haji Lane

Bar Stories is on Haji Lane, close to Arab Street, and the small sign was easy for us to miss. We had walked along the same street a few days earlier without noticing the bar at all. This time we knew what to look for, which made the search considerably shorter. Haji Lane was already part of our exploring around Singapore; finding somewhere for a drink gave us a good reason to return.

The Atmosphere: Casual and Uncomplicated

The room at Bar Stories was laid-back, with a simple interior and music I enjoyed. Anyone expecting the grandeur of ATLAS, Singapore’s grand cocktail bar, should adjust those expectations before arriving. Here the look leaned toward the kind of hipster café style we have written about before. It was comfortable enough for a drink, though the setting itself was not the highlight.

We were the first guests of the day, while the team was still preparing fresh juices for the evening. Our bartender welcomed us and let us choose where to sit, so we took the places closest to the bar. Being near the preparation suited this particular visit: we were there to see what she would make of our requests, and to ask a few questions along the way.

Bar Stories Singapore Has No Formal Cocktail Menu

There was no cocktail list to work through. Our bartender asked about the flavors we liked, what we wanted in our drinks, and the kind of mood we were in. Both of us wanted something refreshing that would suit an evening in Singapore. Ian was happy to include some heat, while I was thinking of fruit, rum, and something tropical. It was an easy conversation, and much more useful than trying to guess a drink from its name.

The no-menu approach remains central to Bar Stories’ identity: its official description says drinks are customized to a guest’s taste and mood. If you are planning a visit, a favorite spirit, the amount of sweetness you enjoy, and any ingredients you dislike give the bartender a useful starting point. You do not need to arrive with a cocktail recipe of your own.

Our bartender, who helped turn a conversation about flavors into two very different drinks.

Our Cocktails: Tropical Rum and Gin with a Little Heat

Freshly squeezed juices were an important part of the drinks we tried, and their flavors came through clearly. I liked that freshness, as well as the care taken over the glasses when they arrived. There was plenty of flavor in both cocktails, enough to make us slow down and pay attention to what was in them. This was the strongest part of our evening.

My tropical cocktail combined a house blend of seven rums with passion fruit, orange, lime, and egg white.

My Tropical Rum Cocktail

Mine began with a house blend of seven rums, mixed with passion fruit, fresh orange juice, and lime. Egg white gave it a creamier texture, and the bartender described a Japanese fruit component that reminded me of sweet marzipan. I did not record its name, so I would not try to identify it now. The combination suited the tropical drink I had asked for, complete with a flaming garnish. I could easily imagine taking that glass to a beach on Sentosa, although our seats beside the bar were a more practical arrangement.

A little salt on a lime shell became part of our before-and-after tasting.

Ian’s Gin Cocktail and the Salt Experiment

Ian’s drink went in a sharper direction: gin, yuzu juice, lime, sugar syrup, and a little chili. The bartender added a small pinch of salt to a lime shell, which he was to dip into the drink. We both tasted it before and after, and the difference was noticeable. To us, the salt brought out more sweetness and some floral notes. It was a small adjustment, and a useful reminder of how much a cocktail can change without adding another large ingredient.

Her explanation of the components made both drinks more interesting. We could connect what we were tasting with the choices she had made, from the creamy texture in mine to the citrus and heat in Ian’s. The tom yum cocktail that first caught our attention remained a recommendation we had heard, not a drink we ordered; these two personalized glasses gave us plenty to talk about on their own.

Fresh citrus and strong flavors gave us plenty to enjoy slowly.

Conclusion: A Good Stop for Curious Cocktail Drinkers

Bar Stories worked best for us as a place to sit near the bartender and explore a few flavors. The fruit in my rum cocktail, the heat in Ian’s gin drink, and that small salt experiment were more memorable than the room. I enjoyed the unhurried sipping and the friendly explanations, even if the overall experience did not place it among my favorite Singapore bars. For someone who likes having a say in what goes into the glass, it is a good address to keep in mind on Haji Lane. Our visit to 28 Hong Kong Street, another discreet Singapore cocktail bar, is a useful companion read if you are planning more than one stop.

A large table and a name that seems to invite a conversation.
