Finding an Asian dessert that satisfies a thoroughly Western sweet tooth can sometimes take a little detective work. When the search succeeds, however, the reward is usually generous. While exploring Melaka, we found ours at Italy Bakery Melaka, a local bakery away from the busiest streets of the old town.

The name made us expect croissants and a touch of Europe, but the bright, orderly displays felt closer to the Japanese bakeries we had encountered on our travels. Cakes, tarts, bread and pastries filled the counters, everything looked immaculate, and choosing only a few things quickly became unrealistic.

We tested the bakery more than once, and by the end of our visits the staff may well have remembered us. Vivi began with the tarts while I gathered a Japanese-style layered cake, a cupcake, a Danish pastry, a cheese stick, three kinds of doughnuts and a slice of apple strudel. Restraint had clearly stayed behind at the hotel.

The variety was more impressive than the quantity alone. We also tried the coffee, which was more than decent and made the bakery a comfortable place to pause rather than simply collect a box and leave.

The following day confirmed that locals shared our enthusiasm. The bakery was busy, yet the displays remained full as new goods arrived. From what we observed, pastries were baked at another location and delivered regularly. The sight of a small truck loaded with fresh supplies was reassuring, although it did nothing to calm our appetite.

Chiffon Cakes and a Strawberry Finale

On our second visit, we shared two small chiffon cakes, one chocolate and one classic. Their airy crumb was as soft as a cloud and seemed to dissolve in the mouth. Both were buttery and gently sweet. We would have welcomed a deeper chocolate flavor in the darker version, but its light texture still made it easy to enjoy.

For the finale, we chose a heart-shaped Valentine cake filled with strawberry cream. It was large enough for four sensible people or two determined dessert hunters. The cream tasted fresh and milky, the strawberries brought a welcome brightness, and the moist sponge kept the cake from feeling overly rich.

Its clean presentation, broad selection and consistently enjoyable pastries brought us back the very next day.
