It’s a difficult task to find an Asian dessert that would satisfy Western’s sweet tooth. However, when you find one it rewards you generously. In Melaka, we were sniffing for some good desserts when God showed us his mercy. In front of us, there was a glorious bakery with not so convenient name – Italy Bakery. We found it far from the tourist zone, and I’m sure it will help some Jean Luc to find his croissant early in the morning. The name may not be felicitous but the desserts are! This bakery looks like a Japanese one. Everything is neat and clean; the desserts are gloriously displayed everywhere and even the staff looks like one.
We tested this place several times and I’m sure they won’t forget us. Vivi started with their tarts, while I was grabbing various pastries. On my plate, there were a Japanese layered cake, a cupcake, a Danish roll, a cheese stick, three sorts of doughnuts, and some classic apple strudel. Everything was delicious and I’m not exaggerating: baked to perfection, with different tastes. Not like some bakeries which use the same dough for every single piece of dessert they have in stock.
The look of those pastries was also outstanding. The cakes in the fridge looked even nicer than those we saw in Singapore. My favorites were doughnuts. They weren’t too heavy or too fatty, with a nice combination of creamy topping and soft dough. Better ones I got only at Koh Phi Phi, Thailand. Even my apple strudel was adequate, and we have a high standard for this dessert. Especially, after we tried one in Gostilna Jakse in Slovenia. Still dreaming about it… That was really something.
Vivi’s tarts were also delicious. She liked the cranberry one the most. A nice combination of sour fruits and crispy but still moist dough. Here, we also tried their coffee which was more than decent. The ambient is pleasant and it looks like it is a popular place for stopping by. This was confirmed the very next day when we came for the second party and it was full of people, but pastries and cakes were still there. They fill this place constantly. As we saw, they bake at another location and deliver their goodies. I guess they have more shops like this one. And they should! Anyway, this little truck was loaded with goods and so was my mouth with saliva.
In the second round, we smashed two small chiffon cakes. One was chocolate while the other one was a traditional one. The dough was soft like a cloud, melting nicely in our mouth. Buttery and sweet just as it should have been. The chocolate could be a bit richer for us, but it worked anyway. For the grand finale, we got a Valentine cake in a shape of a heart. It was a strawberry cream cake, big enough for four persons or two furious ones like us. The taste was fresh, and cream wasn’t a fixed one. Great milky taste with strawberries on a moist biscuit. If you ever wander in Melaka and search for some good pastries, this is the right place for you.
