Vienna Christmas market mugs were supposed to be a small souvenir from our Christmas trip. Then I spotted a little boot-shaped cup, and suddenly the shape of the mug mattered almost as much as the mulled wine inside it. Ian noticed. Vienna Christmas Market Mugs: Choosing a Favorite
We went to Vienna for its Christmas markets and visited several of them. Their settings and stalls varied, and so did the mugs in which they served mulled wine. Looking at the cups became part of our market browsing, alongside the decorations and everything else competing for our attention.
Several mugs made it onto my shortlist. The little boot was the one I kept thinking about, though, and Ian could tell that an ordinary cup was unlikely to settle the matter. We started looking for that particular design as we moved between the markets. At this point, it was still a pleasant diversion.
I Wanted My Christmas Boot Cup
The first boot-shaped cup we tracked down was red. It was not the one I had in mind, and by then our train departure was getting uncomfortably close. I was ready to give up. Ian had become even more determined, stopping people who were carrying the right cup and asking, “Where did you get that?” Our souvenir hunt had acquired something of a CSI atmosphere: a man in a hurry questioning strangers about a small ceramic boot.
I am still grateful to everyone who stopped and helped. Their directions eventually led us to the Christmas market at Stephansplatz, where we found the cup I wanted. We drank our mulled wine beside St. Stephen’s Cathedral, finally holding the little boot we had spent so much time chasing. I am sure the search made it more special. There were plenty of souvenirs we could have chosen; this one came with a story involving both of us and several very patient strangers.
Where to Find a Boot Mug in Vienna
Stephansplatz is where we found ours, so it is a useful starting point for your own search. At this operator’s markets, hot drinks carry a €5 mug deposit, separate from the drink price. You may return the cup for the deposit or keep it as a souvenir.
