The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur Review: Our Majestic Wing Stay

We had passed The Majestic several times before staying there, and every time our eyes stopped at the entrance. Perhaps it was the white facade, the colonial-style uniforms or simply the sense that arriving here was meant to feel like an occasion. When a porter welcomed us at the door, the hotel immediately lived up to that first impression.

Our stay took us into the original Majestic Wing, where a spacious suite, 24-hour butler service and access to the Majestic Club made the experience especially personal. Not every detail reached the same standard, particularly at breakfast, but the atmosphere, remarkably comfortable bed and attentive service are the reasons we would happily stay again. First Impressions and Check-In

There are really two Majestics here. The restored 1932 hotel forms the Majestic Wing, while the much taller Tower Wing rises behind it. They are very different buildings, but the newer one does not fight the old. The spacious lobby made an immediate impression. A large table and an elaborate flower arrangement stood at its center, surrounded by seating areas and a long reception desk. Check-in was quick, and a porter accompanied us and our luggage to the original Majestic Wing.

Our suite included 24-hour butler service and Majestic Club privileges. The club became our quiet retreat, a place for reading over complimentary drinks and snacks when Kuala Lumpur felt a little too energetic. We spent more time there than expected, which is usually the best sign that a hotel lounge is doing its job well.

Our Majestic Wing Suite

The hotel currently has 300 rooms and suites. The Majestic Wing contains 47 heritage suites, while the Tower Wing has 253 Art Deco rooms and suites. Ours was in the original wing, with a separate living room, bedroom and bathroom. Antique cabinets, timber floors and butterscotch wallpaper gave it a convincing period character without sacrificing modern comfort.

The living room had enough space for a writing desk, a comfortable sofa and the second cup of coffee that somehow tastes better when there is nowhere urgent to be. The bathroom continued the colonial look with black-and-white tiles, a bathtub and a walk-in shower. Most importantly, the suite came across as comfortable and lived-in, not showroom perfect.

The bed was our favorite part of the suite and one of the most comfortable we had slept in after many months on the road. That is not a small compliment. The room was generally tidy and welcoming, although cleanliness reflects that we still noticed some room for improvement.

Breakfast and Dining

For us, a beautiful room and polished service are not enough if the food falls behind. During our stay, we had breakfast at Contango, snacks in the Majestic Club, cocktails at The Smoke House and afternoon tea in the Orchid Conservatory.

Breakfast was served at Contango, where coffee or tea arrived quickly and the team kept a close eye on our cups. The buffet was extensive, with Indian, Japanese, Malaysian, Thai and English dishes, a fresh juice station and a generous dessert selection. We particularly enjoyed the pani puri.

Variety was not the problem. We would have traded part of it for better cold cuts and a more interesting cheese selection. One day, some of the desserts in the Majestic Club were also a little too dry for our taste. None of this ruined the stay, but food was less consistent than the hotel’s strongest elements. Cocktails at The Smoke House

For cocktails, we moved to The Smoke House. Its cigar room, vintage billiard table and long drinks list suited the 1930s mood of the Majestic Wing. We also met a gentleman whose travel stories stayed with us long after the evening ended. He happened to be a former professional billiards player and beat me while playing with one hand, which tells you almost everything you need to know about that game.

Afternoon Tea in the Orchid Conservatory

Our afternoon tea in the Orchid Conservatory was a very different experience. Surrounded by orchids, we enjoyed an Easter-themed menu in one of the most unusual afternoon tea settings we had visited. Facilities and Amenities

The Majestic is not a hotel that runs out of rooms to explore. The Majestic Wing includes the Colonial Café, Tea Lounge, Drawing Room, Orchid Conservatory and Smoke House, while the Tower Wing contains Contango, the gym and one of the outdoor pools. A second pool sits beside The Majestic Spa.

During our visit, it was easy to move between being active, productive and completely lazy. The gym and pools covered the practical side, while the reading spaces, piano music and quieter corners gave us reasons to remain inside. The tailor, cigar room and barbershop at The Smoke House were details we rarely encountered elsewhere.

Service at The Majestic Hotel KL

Service throughout our stay was professional and confident. Check-in and check-out were smooth, the staff communicated clearly, and we felt welcome in the restaurants and bars. The Smoke House team deserves a special mention for remaining polished even late in the evening, with the billiard table prepared and our drinks made properly.

We even called our butler to have our shoes cleaned, and he handled the request perfectly. Hotels with properly trained butlers have a particular charm, but it was not only the formal service that stayed with us. The uniforms, small conversations and feeling that somebody was paying attention made the hotel feel less staged and more alive.

Complimentary Local Shuttle

During our stay, the complimentary shuttle took hotel guests to Bukit Bintang, from where we could get to our memorable Ritz Carlton Kuala Lumpur afternoon tea. The current Marriott listing still mentions a complimentary local shuttle, although routes and schedules can change. Confirm the latest details with the hotel if the service is important to your plans.

Would We Stay at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur Again?

Yes. The Majestic will remain in our hearts because the stay felt like more than a comfortable night in the city. The old wing still carried its history, our suite gave us room to slow down, and the service made the experience personal. We even stayed long enough to see the main lobby bouquet change and, naturally, each chose a different favorite.

Still, we should be honest about what did not work as well. Some food could have tasted better, the breakfast would have benefited from fewer items and better ingredients, and plastic spoons had no place in a five-star hotel. Cleanliness also had some room for improvement. Even with those reservations, the bed, atmosphere, facilities, value and many moments of excellent service made it a hotel we would return to.

Other YTL Hotels We Have Stayed At

The Majestic was not our first or last stay with YTL Hotels in Malaysia. Although the four properties below share an owner, none of them felt like a copy of another. One is built around a rooftop pool in the city, while another places Peranakan history at the center of the stay.
