A Sunday in George Town does not need much of a plan. The Hin Bus Depot Sunday Market in Penang is a good place to browse handmade crafts, look at art, and fit in another meal. We found local musicians, small stalls, and four flavors of water kefir that all needed tasting, apparently. If food and art tend to interrupt your sightseeing, leave a little time for this one.

Hin Bus Depot Sunday Market: What to Expect

Hin Market brings food vendors, craftspeople, artists, and musicians together at Hin Bus Depot, an arts and events space on Jalan Gurdwara. The organizer currently lists the Sunday market from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with free admission. There are Saturday markets too, along with a Friday market from noon to 7:00 PM. Check the official visitor guide and the program for your chosen date, since individual events can have their own hours.

What I liked was the mixture of things to do without having to move between separate attractions. We could look at handmade jewelry and shirts, stop for food, and wander through the art in the garden. Small pots of succulents, handicrafts, and dreamcatchers shared space with the food stalls. Food and Live Music at Hin Market

Food was a good reason to stay for lunch. We found laksa, nasi lemak, and homemade drinks, as well as food trucks selling burgers and pizza. Everything we tried was enjoyable, and the range made it easy to choose according to our appetite. Local musicians played while people ate in the garden, giving us another reason to take our time. The traders change, so come ready to see what is cooking that day.

Handmade Crafts and Art in the Garden

The craft stalls and artworks made Hin Market as interesting to browse as it was to eat at. Handmade accessories, clothing, plants, and art gave us plenty to look through, and the friendly exchanges around the stalls added to the afternoon. Supporting small local businesses is central to the market’s purpose. Here, that meant being able to meet the people behind the things on sale.

Ian was going back and forth across the garden to look at the paintings, sculptures, and installations. There was enough variety to keep him occupied while the food stalls competed for our attention. I enjoyed having both in the same place, with no need to turn the visit into a serious shopping expedition. Browsing was quite enough.

One display left a very different impression. We saw small live fish inside water-filled lightbulbs with plants, in so little space that they could barely turn around. I found it upsetting. A decorative object should not come at the expense of the animal living inside it, and I would have been much happier to see the plants on their own.

Water Kefir at The Pharm Hut

The water kefir at The Pharm Hut was one of our favorite discoveries. The seller had four flavors to try: pineapple, passionfruit, ginger, and dragon fruit. Her bottles were at different stages of fermentation, which made the tasting interesting beyond the choice of fruit. The younger samples were sweeter, while the older ones we tasted had more acidity and fizz.

After trying all four, we chose ginger and passionfruit. The ginger was a more mature ferment, with a refreshing acidity and plenty of bubbles. Passionfruit was sweeter, with a rich aroma that made it closer to a little dessert in a drink. I enjoyed the difference between the two, and would choose according to taste.

Location and Planning Your Visit

Hin Bus Depot is at 31A, Jalan Gurdwara, 10300 George Town, Penang. Its public areas have longer opening hours than the market, so an open gate does not necessarily mean the stalls are trading. If the market is your reason for coming, plan around its published hours and check the event listing for the date you have in mind. I would include Hin Market in a George Town weekend if you enjoy handmade things, art, and an unhurried lunch. We liked being able to follow our interests from one stall to the next, with music in the garden and something else to taste along the way. Allow enough time to browse as well as eat; the artworks kept Ian occupied just as effectively as the food kept me interested.
