The Smoke House Kuala Lumpur Review: Cocktails at The Majestic Hotel

The Smoke House at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur does not behave like a typical hotel bar. Hidden inside the historic Majestic Wing, it brings together vintage cocktails, single malt whisky, a billiard table, private dining and a dedicated cigar room beneath one very polished roof.

We arrived for drinks during our stay and remained far longer than planned. The cocktails played their part, but the evening became memorable because of the people we met, the stories shared across the bar and a billiards lesson I had not requested but probably deserved. This review records that visit while separating our 2018 experience from the practical information available today.

Inside The Smoke House at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur

A heritage hotel needs more than old photographs and dark timber to create character. Its public rooms must belong to the same story. The Smoke House succeeds because it does not look as though somebody ordered a generic luxury bar and added a few antique props at the end. Deep armchairs, warm lamps, framed pictures and a vintage billiard table give the rooms an identity of their own.

The hotel currently describes The Smoke House as a lounge and bar with private dining, a cigar room, a bespoke tailor and an outpost of Truefitt & Hill. That combination explains why the venue resembles a small gentlemen’s club, although it is not reserved for men. Vivi and I visited together, and the bar itself was the part that mattered to us.

We especially liked how easily the evening moved between different moods. We could sit quietly with a drink, speak with other guests or gather around the billiard table. Nothing demanded attention, yet there was always something to look at. The room encouraged people to remain for a second drink without turning the night into a performance.

The Majestic Hotel Bar: Atmosphere, Service and the Cigar Room

The lounge occupies the social center of The Smoke House, while the smaller rooms add privacy. A separate dining room can host a more secluded meal, and the cigar room is lined with spirits chosen to accompany the post-dinner ritual. Even visitors with no interest in cigars can appreciate the level of detail, although anyone sensitive to smoke should stay in the main lounge and ask the team about the current smoking arrangements.

Service was one of the strongest parts of our visit. The team knew the drinks, remained present without hovering and treated the bar as more than a place to deliver glasses. Good hotel bars depend on this kind of judgment. A bartender must know when to explain a cocktail, when to join a conversation and when to let two guests enjoy their evening in peace.

During our evening, guests using the cigar room could borrow a smoking jacket and freshen up afterward. It was an old-fashioned detail, but it made sense within this particular setting. The jackets were not there as costume pieces for photographs. They completed a ritual that the room took seriously.

The Smoke House Majestic Hotel Menu: Cocktails We Tried

The current hotel description still emphasizes vintage cocktails and a connoisseur’s selection of single malt whiskies. Menus change, however, and the three drinks below belong to our 2018 visit. Treat them as a record of what we tasted, not a promise that every recipe remains available today.

Code 55 and 2 Bulat

I chose Code 55 and 2 Bulat, a signature cocktail built from beer, lemonade, gin and whisky. Beer and lemonade gave it a deceptively easy beginning, then the two measures of spirit arrived and changed the direction completely. It was strong, direct and better suited to slow drinking than casual refreshment.

Captain Tan Meng Tan told us the story behind its name. According to the hotel anecdote, a woman entered a dining room and found a familiar gentleman sharing dinner with another woman. When the captain approached for her order, she asked for “Code 55 and 2 Bulat,” a phrase meant to sound like a gun and two bullets. The gentleman wisely ended the dinner before the drink, or anything less civilized, could arrive.

The tale may have been polished over many retellings, but that is part of the appeal. A signature drink becomes more memorable when it belongs to the building, and few hotel-bar stories begin with an interrupted romantic dinner.

Tanqueray Blue

Vivi ordered the Tanqueray Blue, made during our visit with Tanqueray No. Ten gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup, cranberry juice and blue ginger infusion. Blue ginger is a flowering plant, not simply ordinary ginger in a more dramatic outfit. Its gentle floral character worked with the tart citrus and cranberry, while the syrup softened the alcohol without burying the gin.

The Malayan Colada

The Malayan Colada took the familiar Piña Colada in a more savory direction. Golden rum, coconut cream, Angostura bitters, single cream, salt and pineapple produced a rich drink with fruit at the front and a mild bitter note behind it. The touch of salt sharpened the sweetness and stopped the coconut from becoming heavy. Of the three cocktails, this was the easiest to understand immediately, but it still carried enough of the bar’s personality to avoid becoming a standard resort drink.

Would We Return to The Smoke House Kuala Lumpur?

Yes. The Smoke House was one of those bars where the room, service and company mattered as much as the liquid in the glass. We met a guest whose travel stories carried the evening, then moved to the billiard table, where I discovered that our apparently casual opponent had once played professionally. He beat me while using one hand. I have chosen to remember this as excellent hospitality.

Not every visitor will want the cigar-room side of the experience, and the formality may be unnecessary if you simply want a quick beer. For us, the bar worked because it gave The Majestic Hotel another living room, one with its own habits and stories. We would return for a late cocktail, a good whisky and another game of billiards, although next time I might ask a few questions before agreeing to play.
