Majestic High Tea : Orchid Conservatory

September 24, 2018

Orchid Conservatory

Majestic afternoon tea in Orchid Conservatory was one of the most overwhelming high tea events in Kuala Lumpur. Only walking down the hallways at the Majestic hotel is something I really enjoyed. Simply because there are so many different amenities that I loved to admire. Each step revealed a different image and my tempo always slowed down when I passed the Orchid Conservatory.

Orchid Conservatory at Majestic Hotel
Orchid Conservatory at Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur is an outstanding place.

My desire to experience afternoon tea surrounded by blooming orchids started even before I set foot in the Majestic Hotel. It was actually the picture on the official website of the hotel that sparked my interest. It was, however, also cause for a little disappointment as the setting on the photo was different than the one in person – nevertheless, it still looks pretty neat.

The combination of smooth flowers and lace napkins on the table kept me engaged while we were on the waiting list for our Majestic afternoon tea. Given that this is the most desirable area for Majestic high tea themes and private events, I recommend making a reservation in advance. We did that and it allowed us to enjoy our short stay in Kuala Lumpur just the way we wanted to.

Orchid Conservatory
Ok, this is the last photo of ambiance. I swear.

Before the tea party started, I had to see the orchids up close, just to admire their beauty: they were all healthy looking and they made an absolutely perfect background for photos. When I feasted my eyes on the colorful blooms it was time to enjoy the afternoon tea menu, so I left the flowers for selfie lovers. The afternoon tea set looked very nice.

Tea Selection at Majestic High Tea

First, we had to choose our tea from the Twinings Large-leaf Discovery Collection. Our preference among the selection was the Rose Garden Black Tea and Exotic Mango & Ginger Green Tea. The Rose Garden tea had a delicate taste and a gentle rose aroma, but in the foreground, there was a taste of black tea. The delicate green tea wasn’t overtaken by the fruitiness of the mango, and the ginger added a gentle zing.

Twining tea in a box
At The Majestic Hotel, they serve Twinings teas, which aren’t quality enough for high demanding tea lovers, like us.

The common characteristic of the teas we tasted was that the tea flavor was put in the foreground despite the additional strong aromas. Regarding the tea, I must admit that I was rather disappointed with the Twinings Premium Collection.  There just wasn’t enough flavor. Don’t get me wrong, I love pure tea without any added flavors or aroma, but in my cup, I am always looking for essences and here, they were severely lacking.

Savory

We started off with a scotch egg that had the right amount of spicy sauce on top of the egg. Another warm appetizer was a fishball, where the fishy flavor wasn’t overwhelming and it was delicious on its own. Warm appetizers were the exception where both of us got individual samples and we didn’t have to measure which one got the bigger half of the finger food.

savories
Hot savories at Majestic high tea were delicious.

The last one item on the warm tray was the vegetable samosas and I loved every single bite of it: it was rich in flavor and had a moist filling. The fried dough was crunchy and just like the other two deep-fried dishes, it wasn’t too oily.

savoury
Is it just me, or is this heater for savories so special?

There is something primal about sharing my food. I just don’t like it and Ian knows that stealing the last bite off my plate is a bad idea. When the situation does occur, I stay civil and I’m ready to share so that each of us gets a taste of whatever it is that we’re having, and on this particular occasion, it was six sandwiches. The salmon sandwich was nicely seasoned and it had a slightly sweet spread. The second traditional sandwich was an egg sandwich, which was tasty but a little dry. The smoked ham sandwich had a strong comforting flavor that I liked very much.

savoury
Only one sandwich of each type? That’s barbaric!

Bonus

A nice addition to this high tea menu was the complimentary Chef additions. I started with a delicious Chicken pie and a mocktail that I fell in love with. As it turned out, they make a special mocktail every day with their own special blend of tea and we had the pleasure to relish an Earl Gray based mocktail. The intense flavors weren’t too syrupy and the fruity aroma was an extension of exquisite drink. The only problem was that it disappeared too soon.

Scones

Scones were spot on, with the crunchy crust and interior in the middle of a muffin and biscuit.  At the Majestic Hotel, the scones were perfect with the clotted cream and strawberry jam they were served with. They had a crunchy crust with a light and soft texture of the interior. These rustic beauties came to the table in two flavors, and both the plain and raisin ones were exquisite.

Sweet

The modern sandwich stand brought contrast to the Granny-Chic style table. It’s a great piece to present these delicious little bites. On top of it was the chocolate egg which contributed to the Easter theme, especially with nest imitation made of popped rice. The beautiful egg was accompanied by chocolate which had been shaped into a bee, with matcha cream and sweet vanilla filling on top of the sponge cake.

And full of chocolate surprise.

That was a nice combination where luscious creaminess ruled the mouth. The blissful bee had a nice counterbalance in the shape of a chocolate cake with a sweet carrot on top. The intense chocolate flavor was there to satisfy those that swear on dark chocolate. One critique of this wonderful experience was the use of the completely unnecessary plastic spoon in mini glass. We had all the cutlery we needed and a 5-star hotel should consider its environmental impact.

Conclusion

Like all good things, even our Majestic high tea here in Orchid Conservatory come to an end. No matters what this lovely experience will surely remain in our memory. I believe this is where we’ve had the most diverse menu, with the chef’s compliments so far. Little extra touches, just like these additions by the chef, are seen in many places throughout the hotel. One of those places happens to be the lobby, where there is a gorgeous flower arrangement that right away grabs your attention. This was a very special experience, for afternoon tea but as well as for the hotel itself. Only downvotes are a tea selection and only one sample of sandwiches and sweets. We like to share, but not small bites. Hey, for more ideas check our Best High Tea in Kuala Lumpur (KL) article and get inspired.
