After enjoying the Four Seasons KL high tea and High on Sugar afternoon tea around KLCC, we were ready to explore another side of Kuala Lumpur’s tea scene. This time, we headed to Bukit Bintang for the Ritz-Carlton KL high tea, served in the hotel’s elegant Lobby Lounge. Our afternoon brought live music, attentive service, Ronnefeldt teas and a mostly rewarding tiered selection, although the final sweets were not all equally successful.

Inside The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur Lobby Lounge
The glossy hotel entrance soon becomes a distant memory once you settle into the Lobby Lounge, where the mood is warmer and more intimate. Plush furnishings and a patterned carpet soften the long room, while earthy shades of brown, beige and blue keep it calm. Mirrors at the far end add depth without making the lounge feel cold or overly formal.
We chose seats beside the enormous crystal chandelier, with the musical trio playing from the opposite side of the balcony. It turned out to be a fine decision: the chandelier sparkled beside us, the acoustics were excellent and the occasional couple stopping for a photograph provided a little extra entertainment. Afternoon tea should never feel hurried, and this room encouraged us to settle in.
Ronnefeldt Tea at Ritz-Carlton KL High Tea
During our visit, black teas formed the largest part of the Ronnefeldt selection, but the menu also ranged from bittersweet green teas to floral blends, fruit infusions and herbal options. The staff watched our teapots carefully and replenished the hot water whenever needed. Two teas in particular gave the afternoon its character.
The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur Blend
“It’s now or never,” we told each other when we spotted the exclusive Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur blend. This Tie Guan Yin oolong was steamed with milk, giving the large leaves an unusual creaminess without hiding their complexity. Its floral, sweet and creamy notes made it the most distinctive choice on the menu and an easy recommendation for guests who enjoy gentler oolongs.
Royal Gunpowder
Our Royal Gunpowder from Formosa had a lighter character than its formidable name suggested. Smoky, woody undertones met a honeyed sweetness and measured bitterness, while the tannins refreshed the palate between buttery bites. It was a practical partner for the food as well as an interesting tea in its own right.
Warm Scones with Clotted Cream and Jam
The scones arrived warm, accompanied by clotted cream and strawberry jam, a combination that makes us happy almost every time. Here, however, the portions of both spreads were too small. Once they disappeared, the scones felt sticky and clung to our teeth. A sip of tea rescued the situation, but a more generous helping of cream and jam would have made this course far more satisfying.
Savories at The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur Afternoon Tea
An amuse-bouche is still a rarity at afternoon tea, which made the opening bite feel like a small promise from the kitchen. We had last encountered one at the Authors’ Lounge, and the memory was still fresh. At The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur, crisp rye bread with ricotta and honey proved how satisfying a simple combination can be when its textures and seasoning are properly balanced.
Warm Chicken Pie and Onion Quiche
Alongside the scones, the chicken pie and onion quiche reached the table straight from the oven. Their crisp pastry and moist fillings made their freshness immediately clear. Mushrooms gave the chicken pie extra depth and texture, while the onion quiche was equally accomplished, especially its toothsome pastry.
Afternoon Tea Sandwiches
A memorable tea sandwich begins with good bread. The four sandwiches in our Ritz-Carlton KL high tea set differed in shape, color and flavor, making the stand more interesting before we had taken the first bite. We also received individual portions, a small detail that saved us from negotiating over the most attractive sandwich.
Egg and Cucumber Sandwiches
The brightest sandwich was also the most refreshing. Delicate cream cheese and crisp cucumber sat inside soft rye bread, making it an excellent place to begin. Next came a buttery egg filling with arugula peeking from paprika-tinted bread. It was creamy, gently seasoned and much less conventional than its familiar name suggested.
Salmon and Chicken Curry Sandwiches
Whole-grain German bread made a confident partner for the smoked salmon. Cream cheese and feta supplied moisture and enough seasoning, allowing the fish to remain the focus. At the opposite end of the color palette was a sunny yellow bun filled with curried chicken. Sweet raisins cut through the moist, savory filling and rounded it into a surprisingly harmonious bite.
Sweets at Ritz-Carlton KL High Tea
We began the sweet tier with the only dessert that did not need to be shared: an egg tart filled with rich vanilla custard. The larger pastries were easier to divide, although I could quite happily have handled the excellent macaron alone. Its shell was well made, and a lively raspberry filling kept the sweetness in check.
A heart-shaped cookie with raspberry and white chocolate was just as pleasing, and the pretty purple dessert earned praise for its light raspberry cream. Then the momentum faded. The tall vanilla sponge with buttercream was acceptable but forgettable, while the red velvet cupcake looked far better than it tasted. Its sponge was dry, and a sharp bitterness in the buttercream lingered even after several sips of tea.
Is Ritz-Carlton KL High Tea Worth Booking?
Despite the bitter surprise at the end, we enjoyed our Ritz-Carlton KL high tea. The warm savories, varied sandwiches, distinctive teas and attentive service outweighed the weaker desserts, while the live music and chandelier-lit setting gave the afternoon a genuine sense of occasion. Kitchens occasionally have an imperfect day, and almost everything that preceded the red velvet cupcake showed far better judgment.
Kuala Lumpur has an unusually rich afternoon tea scene, so the choice ultimately depends on the atmosphere you prefer. The Lobby Lounge suits guests who value classic hotel elegance, gracious service and music as much as the food itself.
