Ritz-Carlton KL High Tea Review

April 15, 2019

After enjoying the Four Seasons KL high tea and High on sugar afternoon tea in the KLCC area, we were ready for more. This time we had to change the location to reach a regular on the list known as the best afternoon tea in Kuala Lumpur (KL). Our target was famous Ritz Carlton high tea, situated in the center of Bukit Bintang. If you are thinking about having your tea time here, make sure you check our Ritz-Carlton KL high tea review before.

The Ambiance of the Ritz-Carlton Lobby Lounge

The glossy entrance of the Ritz-Carlton KL becomes a distant memory in the Lobby Lounge, where snug feel takes over. The most significant influence must be the carpet and furnishings. Bright long space becomes even more spacious with large mirrors at the end of the Lobby Lounge. That is a nice addition to the soothing earthy colors ranging from brown, beige, and blue.

Soothing earthy colors range from brown, beige, and blue.

To us, it felt the best to sit next to the enormous crystal chandelier with a musical trio on the other side of the balcony. Unlike others, we had the sparkling neighbor for the duration of our high tea and the best acoustics, I guess. Naturally, shimmering crystal attracted a few couples to eternalize the event with a photo. Not too many, just enough to leave us with ongoing entertainment.

Ronnefeldt Tea Selection at Ritz-Carlton KL High Tea

The tea menu at the Lobby Lounge is most abundant in black tea selections. Even so, the choice of green teas ranges from more bittersweet to floral blends. For those who want to avoid energy boost, can choose herbal and fruit infusions of Ronnefeldt fine teas. In any case, the attentive service will keep an eye on your teapot for more hot water when needed. Here is a little more about our tea choice.

The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur Blend

“It’s now or never,” we said to each other when we saw the exclusive The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur blend. This green tea is steamed with milk instead of water, which leaves it infused with creamy notes. On top of that, it is made from Tie Guan Yin Oolong’s large leaves for more complexity. If you like floral, sweet and creamy tasting notes, we advise to give it a try.

Royal Gunpowder

Harvest at Formosa Island might be the reason to crown this Gunpowder. The tea from Formosa Island has a lighter taste combined with smoky, wooden undertones. Its taste is well rounded with honey-like sweetness and bitterness at once. As a consequence of tannins, it clears the palate well in between the afternoon tea bites.

Scones

Scones for our Ritz-Carlton KL high tea came to the table still warm in a company of clotted cream and strawberry jam. A classic combination that makes us happy every single time. If only there would be more cream and jam, though. Somehow scones became sticky when we ran out of both spreads and started to glue onto teeth. Not very pleasant and certainly not tea etiquette, but with a sip of tea they were adequate.

Afternoon Tea Savories

The afternoon tea with amuse bouche is an exception, but this when happens it indicates you are in for a treat. The last time we got it at the Author’s Lounge, and memory is still fresh. Anyway, here at Ritz-Carlton KL High Tea we got rye bread chips with ricotta cheese and honey. What a simple, unpretentious deliciousness.

Warm Savories

Besides the scones, the chicken pie and onion quiche were also straight from the oven. Their freshness showed in a crisp crust and moist filling. In chicken pie’s filling, I particularly liked the mushroom addition for richer taste and texture. Although the onion quiche didn’t fall short of anything, especially not with that toothsome dough.

A piece of pie anyone?

High Tea Sandwiches

The outstanding tea sandwich starts with the bread. The bread is the base and at Ritz-Carlton KL all of four tea sandwiches differed in shape, color, and taste. Besides that, we also got individual portions, which made me very happy.

The Afternoon Tea Classics; the Egg and Cucumber Sandwich

It does make sense to make the brightest sandwich also the most refreshing one. The delicate cream cheese with crisp cucumber inside the soft rye bread makes an excellent first sandwich. Buttery egg sandwich with arugula peeping out was my next ‘victim’. It had a mouth-watering filling that went well with paprika enhanced bread.

Salmon and Chicken Curry Sandwiches

I love the strong parallel of whole grain German bread and smoked salmon. For more juice, chef coupled it with cream and feta cheese, which happen to be all the necessary seasoning.

Miles away from colorful salmon sandwich was the bun in yellow shades and oriental flavors. Sweet raisins cut through the moist curry chicken and rounded the bun into a delectable bite.

Ritz-Carlton KL High Tea Sweets

For a pleasant transition to the desserts we picked the only sweet treat we didn’t have to share; the egg tart. We were happy to enjoy it whole because neither of us wanted to share the rich egg custard with vanilla. Candidly the rest of the sweet bites were bigger so splitting them wasn’t too painful. Ok, I could handle the excellent macaron on my own.

High tea sweets at Ritz Carlton KL
The only sweet treat we didn’t have to share was the egg tart with rich vanilla egg custard. Hey, where have we seen this gorgeous tableware already? Yes, at our Majestic KL afternoon tea.

It was perfectly prepared with delicious raspberry filling. I can say the same for the tasty heart shaped cookie with raspberries and white chocolate.

romantic sweets
They say that love goes through the stomach. They are right.

Next was the lovely looking purple bite, which also scored high mostly due to the light raspberry cream. Sadly, the last two pieces let us down. Not that it was anything wrong with the tall vanilla sponge cake with buttercream. To me, it just wasn’t anything special. What I can’t say for the red velvet cupcake with a stunning rose on top. First, the red velvet sponge was too dry, but the buttercream was inedible. I don’t have a clue where the sharp bitterness came from, but it didn’t want to leave my palate even after a few sips of tea.

Conclusion

Even with a bitter shock at the end, we enjoyed the Ritz-Carlton KL high tea greatly. After all, chefs are only humans that can experience some unexpected setback. We believe it is an easy fix, especially for the kitchen that impressed us with all other bites. Furthermore, the attentive service gave us enough attention even with plenty of demanding guests. It looks like the waiter job also includes skilled photographers. Keeping people happy proves to be a more and more challenging task.

However, as we said before, Kuala Lumpur is full of afternoon tea options. Don’t forget to check our Best High Tea in Kuala Lumpur (KL) list.
