Hotel Majestic Saigon Review: A Grand Address With Rough Edges

Hotel Majestic Saigon has occupied one of Ho Chi Minh City’s finest riverfront corners since 1925. Its French colonial façade, marble lobby and century of history give it an identity that newer luxury hotels cannot reproduce. Yet heritage alone does not guarantee a polished five-star stay. In this Hotel Majestic Saigon review, we look at our Colonial Suite, breakfast, facilities and service, including the details that charmed us and those that left the grand old hotel looking tired.

A Century of Hotel Majestic Saigon History

Hotel Majestic Saigon opened in 1925, commissioned by Hui Bon Hoa, one of the city’s most prominent businessmen. Its position at the corner of Dong Khoi Street and the Saigon River was an inspired choice. The address remains central to the experience today, placing guests within walking distance of Nguyen Hue Walking Street, the Opera House and the cafés, shops and historic buildings of District 1.

The hotel’s story mirrors the changes that shaped Saigon. It passed through different owners and uses, became a government guesthouse after 1975 and later returned to its original name. A major restoration began in 1994, followed by the addition of the eight-story Saigon Wing in 2003. The hotel now has 175 rooms and suites, but the original building remains the reason to stay.

Atmosphere and Riverfront Location

Few hotels in Ho Chi Minh City arrive with such an immediate sense of place. The pale façade curves toward the river, the lobby glitters with polished stone and chandeliers, and old photographs and antiques help connect the building to its past. Stepping outside places you directly in the energy of central Saigon. Traffic is constant, but so are the views, especially when the city lights begin to reflect on the water.

The illusion of timeless elegance weakens in the details. During our stay, some corners needed repair, large billboards distracted from the exterior and a corridor illuminated in blue looked oddly detached from the rest of the hotel. None of this erased the building’s charm, though it did make the five-star classification harder to accept without reservations.

Check-In and Service

Our arrival was the weakest part of the stay. Nobody offered to help with our luggage, so after completing the formalities at reception, we made our own way to the room. This may be a small moment on paper, but arrival sets the tone at a luxury hotel. With a century of hospitality behind the name, we expected a warmer and more attentive welcome.

The plate of fresh tropical fruit waiting in our suite softened that first impression. Service elsewhere was functional, although it never developed the personal confidence that makes a historic hotel truly memorable. The building carried the story; the hospitality did not always bring it to life.

Our Colonial Suite

Space was the Colonial Suite’s strongest quality. Dark herringbone floors, high ceilings and traditional furniture gave the room a reassuring sense of permanence, while the generous layout allowed us to settle in comfortably. The king-size bed delivered a good night’s sleep, and the room was exceptionally clean throughout our stay.

Some pieces lacked grace, but they belonged to the room more convincingly than a generic contemporary redesign would have. The bathroom was less successful. Marble and an oversized bathtub promised luxury, yet the composition looked dated and missed the sophistication found in the bedroom. The handsome antique-style fittings were the detail we remembered most.

Pool and Hotel Facilities

The courtyard pool is tucked inside the hotel, away from the traffic along the river. Its enclosed position creates privacy, and the surrounding architecture adds character, but this is not a resort-style pool where we would spend an entire day. It works well for a short swim or a quiet break between sightseeing stops.

A fitness center, spa, business facilities and casino broaden the offer. We found everything necessary for a city stay, though the facilities were not the main attraction. Hotel Majestic Saigon makes most sense as a historic base for exploring District 1, with the pool and gym serving as useful additions when the heat becomes too persuasive.

Breakfast at Hotel Majestic Saigon

Breakfast at Breeze Sky Bar exceeded the modest expectations created by our arrival. Eating outdoors above a city already in full motion was one of the stay’s most enjoyable rituals. The broad buffet combined international staples with Vietnamese dishes, and the open setting gave the morning a lightness that an enclosed dining room would have lost.

The pho ga was better than we often encounter at large hotel buffets, where famous local dishes can become pale copies of themselves. Seasonal tropical fruit was another highlight: ripe, colorful and exactly what we wanted in Saigon’s warmth. The selection was generous without losing sight of the destination.

The hotel also has several places for drinks and meals. Catinat Lounge offers a quieter pause near the lobby, while M Bar trades intimacy for rooftop views and live atmosphere. We enjoyed the setting more than the cocktails. For ambitious dining, the wider city tempted us away from the hotel, as it often does in Saigon.

Is Hotel Majestic Saigon Worth Staying At?

Yes, with realistic expectations. Hotel Majestic Saigon offers a superb location, a spacious room and a genuine connection to the city’s past. Breakfast overlooking Saigon, the curved colonial façade and the polished wooden floors in our suite gave the stay a character that was easy to appreciate. The room rate also represented good value for such a prominent address.

Its weaknesses matter. Our arrival lacked attention, some design choices disrupted the historic atmosphere and parts of the hotel needed greater care. Guests seeking precise contemporary luxury may be happier elsewhere. Those willing to accept a few rough edges in exchange for history and location will find much more to enjoy. We left wishing that the service and upkeep matched the confidence of the building, because the Majestic deserves to be remembered for more than its address.
