Chocolab Bangkok Review: Thai’s Choco Mania

May 16, 2020

Chocolate offer in Bangkok blew our minds and motivated us to extend our chocolate quest to the outskirts of Lumpini park. That is where Sofitel’s SO/ Bangkok five star hotel stands, with the chocolate cave on the ground floor. Now let’s see if the Sofitel’s Chocolab deserves to be on the list of the best chocolate cafes in Bangkok. Please enjoy our Chocolab Bangkok Review.

Chocolab
If you are lucky, you’ll witness some experimental melting.

Ambiance

Chocolate is everywhere at the Chocolab SO/ Bangkok, even on the ceiling. Well, a giant drop up there is a sculpture, but you can smell and taste the real deal everywhere. The sense of the ultimate delight is evident in the deep dark chocolate color of the interior, with playful elements that signal creativity.

There is nothing industrial at the Chocolab café, even though it is a chocolate factory and confectionary laboratory. If you are in luck, you can even witness the experimental melting in action before your chocolate arrives.

Drinks

Chocolab’s specials and signature drinks are no joke and most certainly not dull. Some of the floats and frappes are a meal on their own, but not all. Lighter ones are based on iced tea or soda and come with fruit or ice cream. On the Chocolab menu, you’ll also find coffee and a few celebratory drinks.

Iced chocolate
Light and refreshing chocolate frappe in tropical heat is always a good idea.

Our Selection

For this Chocolab Bangkok Review, we opted for milky chocolate frappe that was very refreshing and light. Actually, it was the right opposite of the Hot Chocolate Vienna, which was our second and preferred choice. We liked the quality vanilla ice cream that cooled the beverage a little while leaving tasty foam behind. Just like the frappe also the hot chocolate was light, but it had that desirable silky texture.

Chocolab Treats

It is best to go around the Chocolab’s expo when it comes to choosing beautifully handcrafted chocolate delights. Truly the pralines, cupcakes, cakes, lollipops form a real art exhibition made of fine 70% Bonnat chocolate. Honestly, you don’t want to waste all the eye candy on the menu that covers just the staple offering. Not surprisingly, the menu is focused on chocolate treats, but you’ll also find some salads and toasted sandwiches at the Chocolab Bangkok.

Our Selection

So Royal Cake

Utterly delicious chocolate cake serves chocolate in every layer, from glossy topping on the top to the mousse filling and sponge. Perhaps it becomes So Royal with the crisp waffles in the bottom layer and a sprinkle of poppy seeds for extra pop. Regardless of that, our favorite part was an abundance of creamy chocolate mousse.

Don’t miss on utterly delicious So Royal cake!

Cupcake

Chocolate cupcake with the chocolate queen bee on the top looks stunning and signals a companion. Chocolate with honey is surely heavenly, but we would be happy if the honey filling would be less fragrant and more natural. Despite that, it was a moist addition to the dry chocolate ganache and lovely spongy cupcake.

SO pretty.

Praline

We tried four different pralines and loved every single one. The gentlest of all was the white chocolate with coconut and lemongrass. Sadly, coconut was barely present, while lemongrass almost slipped away unnoticed. The second white chocolate praline got a name after its honeycomb shape, guarding the tasty milk chocolate ganache. Chili praline kept its promise and put the melting dark chocolate on manageable fire. Lastly, our favorite praline was the diamond passion fruit, with intense passion fruit taste melting away too quickly.

Final Thought

If you are a passionate chocoholic, choose your chocolate treat wisely and enjoy your time at Sofitel’s Chocolab. Even though the sight of an abundant chocolate offer is a reason for excitement, the quality is what matters. In our opinion, they should focus on fewer products and improve freshness.

Chocolate bee
More than one-third of the world’s food depends on bees, not cocoa flowers, they are pollinated by tiny flies.

Rather than having the offer of a fixed drink, Chocolab should let the customer choose what kind of chocolate should be in their iced or hot chocolate. No matters what, this is an easy fix that guarantees success, and you need just three samples, which shouldn’t be an issue at the chocolate factory and confectionary laboratory.

Chocolab
Abundant offer can be a double-edged sword when freshness is at stake; two of our bites didn’t meet our expectations.
